Dear All,

Having spent about 2 hours last night draining 5L of oil out of a VW Golf I am totally unimpressed with the performance of my new Pela 6000! Had the weather not been so bad, I would have performed the task the old fashioned way within the first hour.

Can anyone tell me whether the connection between the “ Top Hat “ and the pump assembly is supposed to be a tight fit? The one I have is totally slack such that you have to forcibly push down on the pump whilst lifting the plunger in order to maintain a seal of any quality, additionally the pump has to be maintained in a vertical position for fear of loosing the vacuum.

The suction when felt during a successful stroke is very often not felt during the next successive stroke, indicating the vacuum leaks from the chamber as well as from the pump interface.

I believe I read that the idea was to set the system up, go for a coffee and come back 20 mins later to find a sump full of oil in the Pela 600? That seems a fanciful idea in my experience.

Would someone like to comment?
Regards to All

Sounds like you've got a Friday example. Or else it was not set up properly somehow.

I've used the Pela for many years with total success, and I know many others here have also.
The one factor I've found that makes a big difference in its efficiency is to drain the oil immediately after a drive, while the oil is hot. It then flows like milk rather than treacle, and two or three pumping sessions are enough to complete the job.

And yes, I have to hold the body of the pump while I'm pulling the pump handle, but I don't find this a problem.

I have a Draper, and can use it manually or with compressed air, and normally you start it up and go for the coffee...but sometimes, the flexible pipe needs to be poked around a bit..it help's a bit if you park the car facing downhill, favoring the position of the dipstick..IE: if the dipstick is at the front of the engine, then facing downhill will encourage the maximum amount of oil to accumulate at the front of the engine. Ditto for dipsticks at the rear or sides. Let gravity do the work. But you will need to check it now and again to make sure that the pipe is positioned properly....and of course, give it a few pumps to keep the vacuum going.

My Pela is the same, no issues with vacuum and on the smart it was the only option available. My only learning point was not trying to stick it too far in the first time I used it. But let’s face it, what are you going to do given the choices...

Mine got stuck and it came apart a bit on removal so I had to cut the last bit off.

Mines pretty naff and long winded. My thinking is it's no good with viscousil so warmer oil and / or warmer weather.
T'other thought is to use a larger diameter tube.
I'll have to try that, I gave up and dropped through the sump last time.

Dear All,

I take your point about the viscosity of the oil and ordinarily would have used the device within a few minutes of switching off the engine after a drive. However, the instructions clearly state that it is not to be used with hot engine oil, hence I waited 20 odd minutes before using it. I have to admit that the oil was pretty thick towards the end of about two hours.
However, I would have thought that the pump should have been a pretty tight fit on the Top hat.

As a thought, I wonder whether connecting an old vacuum cleaner to the device in place of the pump assembly. Probably, a great idea until it goes wrong.

Thanks for your replies

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
Sounds like the rubber "O" ring is missing/faulty on the connector.

I've used a Sealey (Pela equivalent) for years and wouldn't do an oil change any other way now.

Routine has always been:
1. Warm up oil by a nice drive.
2. Put pump hose into sump.
3. Pump up vacuum.
4. Go make a cuppa.
5. Go back to car and drain pump into old oil container (8 litre sump, 6 litre pump).
6. Repeat 2, 3 and 4. (Step 4 is optional this time and can be replaced by "have biscuit".
7. Remove pump pipe.
8. Insert dipstick.
9. Refill oil to correct level.
10. Start car and take old oil to recycling centre.
11. Check for leaks.
12. Go inside and put on the football (other channels and programs may be substituted)

Total time end to end typically under 1 hour.

Send us some pics of the Pela sections you think have problems , and I'll check mine as well .
I've used mine 10 times on hot oil immediately after a drive , my E320cdi has 8.5L of oil and still takes under an hour all in .
Did you push the tube into the dipstick tube so that it "suctions"against the bottom of the sump , or did you withdraw it a few mm's to get the tube off the bottom of the sump ?

Your thread could not have come at a better time.
What Golf is it?
What diameter tube were you using?
What grade oil were you trying to suck up?

With mine , Lostkiwi I could set it up and go for a 3 course meal in Spain.

The car was a Golf 1.6 Tdi.
Yes I suspended the pipe about a couple of my off the bottom of the sump.
The oil was 5w 30 I presume
I suspect that I my have given the oil too long to cool. As I am now hearing Wighty state he drains his immediately after a drive , that's what I will do in future.

I have just received a call from the dealer how I bought the device from on EBay he says he will send me out a replacement tomorrow, with no need to return the faulty one.
I will let you know the result

Regards again

I bought one last year, worked a treat first time I used it. Tried to use it again a few months later and would not switch on. Tried to dismantle it to see why & decided it was cheaply made crap.

The Lidl or Aldi one that I have ( cant remember which shop I bought it in...) I have found it great for reducing the ATF when you put a little too much in. I also used it to fill the rear axle after draining the oil from it. It was a bit slower with the gear oil, to be honest, but fine for the ATF. For the engine oil, I use a 9 Ltr Draper, and make sure that the oil is hot..the hot oil has never been a problem. But often, I have had to "Fish" with the suction tube. So I check it every now and again during the draining.
