Gents,

I thought I start this as I am driving almost every week to France, Germany and Italy.
New Euro emission rules are now in place all over Europe and more to come before the end of 2019. You MUST display a sticker or face heavy fines, car impounded or more legal complications - not what we all want.

You can buy your Sticker here :

https://www.umwelt-plakette.de/en.html

^^^this is for All areas in Europe. There are apps too so please have these handy.

In France :

https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/

Please buy and display these before you travel to Europe and check all areas where you will be driving: motorways, city centres. In some cases (ie France - proof of payment accepted).
Also in France and Germany new speed laser guns are fitted from January 2019. DO NOT even dare to go over by 20 km/hr unless No speed limit sign is clearly displayed. Also apply for an IDP (international driving licence) as the French Police are ready to fine you 300€. I have one and I was asked show it.

Trust this helps everyone. Drive safe!

Not sure we'll need any of those post March 2019, having said that more will probably be bought in the UK than in the rest of Europe combined  We do like to follow a nice rule over here.

Helpful advice though, thanks :)

Thes rules and regulations are in place with heavy fines therefore if we drive in Europe we must respect these. More and more local authorities are fighting for these to go live.
No worries these will come to the UK too. Soon :)

There is no requirement for an IDP as long as the UK is in the EU. Afterwards is another matter....

These schemes generally apply to cities and large conurbations and won’t affect you if you are driving mostly on Motorways or rural roads.

I’m not sure who Green-Zones.eu are but they appear to be a commercial firm who charge over 30€ for a German sticker. I got mine from a German organisation https://www.tuev-sued.de/auto_fahrzeuge/feinstaub-plakette/feinstaubplakette_ausland/england who charge only 15€.

The French site quoted above is the official one and they only charge a few Euros and it is easy to apply. Interestingly, my previous diesel (179g/Km) got a Yellow “2” sticker but my new petrol (220g/Km) gets the better Purple “1” sticker. (Euro 5 v Euro 6).

The official site for emission zones is http://urbanaccessregulations.eu/ which has some useful information.

As LK says, there is no requirement for an International Driving Permit (as long as you have a UK licence) at the moment but all that may change in a couple of weeks.

We got the French sticker last year, just to be on the safe side. I had to send a scan of the Conformity Certificate (yellow wallet in the handbook pack) as the V5 didn't state which 'EURO' emissions spec the car is. Otherwise simple to do, quick and not too much money. Going to drive through southern Germany in September (Brexit willing) in a Porsche so I will have to check the German requirements...

Not sure on the ring road but I'd guess not (but it's only a guess).
Glad the battery trick worked. Sometimes these cars just get a little confused...

I take back the bit about it not being a problem in rural areas. I was aware of some of the major metropolitan zones but I now see that some of the emergency zones cover big rural areas like the whole of the Camargue which we usually visit when we’re in Provence. Such emergency zones are probably only rarely used when air quality is poor but I will fix my sticker just in case.

In relation to France, this story is just untrue. There are certain cities, who on certain days (very very few per annum) when the pollution is expected to be high, will only allow Crit'air stickered cars into the centre.

So unless you expect to drive into within the périférique in Paris, for example, this is a non issue.

There are other areas to be aware of:
Rennes, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Camargue, Nice and much of Provence and parts of the Alps.
As said though it's only on days when pollution is an issue and not a blanket ban or revenue gathering exercise (unlike the UK).

There is soooooo much bullshit being spouted as fact when it comes to current UK/Euro relations at the moment, it really makes me cross.
