I am surprised that any decent aftermarket disc would have an issues with even spirited driving on our congested roads , track days possibly but not commuting on public roads.

MB Grangemouth are Arnold Clark so they can deliver them to your closest AC dealership.

I got my CLS front discs + pads from Grangemouth and picked them up from AC Renault in Hillington.

IIRC the discounted OEM price was similar to ECP for their discs and pads so it was a no brainer to go for the MB ones.

Kenny

ECP quote £92 (ea) + vat for Pagid and £57 (ea) + vat for Eicher discs so, I assume that the Pagid discs are the better quality units.

Delphi to my knowledge, have a better reputation than either of these units/manufacturers and sell at a trade price of £111 (ea) + vat.
At staff discount prices I paid considerably less than the Eicher units for the Delphi items.

I notice that ECP are advertising Brembo units at £98 (ea) + vat, a well known quality brand. I should be able to get those through work I think and, at a substancially reduced price however, no one has mentioned using them before and I'd prefer to get a recommendation from a club member before using the brand.

As I have mentioned before I am a tight git when it comes to spending my money however, I do like to buy good quality items. I don't think that MB will come close to the staff discount price, hence the reason why I was trying to find out the manufacturer of the MB discs, or go with a strong recommendation from a club member. I can then track down said recommended items at work and get a quote to find the best deal.

IIRC i was around the £200 mark for both front discs and genuine pads from the dealer.

Sorry to add to your confusion but to add to the mix...
Textar make the AMG brake components or at least the last set of pads I got last year- quality was excellent didn’t take much warming and good bite. Discs I didn’t change but they were the originals
And (hoping to avoid the wrath of Craig) EBC red stuff are well worth a look, newer formulation sorts out the only slight gripe I had with my first set of pads which was the warm up time. They are ceramic so create minimal ( and I mean virtually no) dust . Bit more expensive
Can you get either through trade?
Edit: forgot to go back to op message before realising we’re discussing discs ...

EBC are a brand I wouldn't even use on my bicycle....

Personal experience A or what you’ve heard?
I’ve had 2 sets of pads ( one on the 230) and found them to be good. The story from Craig of course was shocking ...

Personal experience. Had them on a Mazda Xedos 6 and had no end of problems with vibration under braking. Replaced with Brembo and no further issues. Also had EBC pads on my mountain bike break up (200mm stainless discs with hydraulic calipers). Not had issues with any other brand even with trips to the Alps when they had some serious hammer.

Malcolm always swore by EBC and has fitted them to his SL and so far they seem ok but I'll fit something else when the time comes.

With regard to the wheel bearing play, we are dealing with testers that have rarely seen cars with taper roller bearings on the front. They're used to front wheel drive bearings that have no play....

My RWD Omega & Senators before it, had none adjustable front wheel bearings. The bearing came as a cassette/hub and when fitted was just tightened up to FT ft/lbs. I was surprised when I came to this forum that cars still had bearings you could adjust.

're discs. Having been given the run around with pattern discs in the past that lasted 3/4000 miles before I had problems with them I just buy OE discs now. The fact that xyz makes discs for abc isn't always going to get you OE quality discs. HP beans are made by Heinz .... but they're different. ;)

This is the first time I've had issues with pattern discs however, it's also the first time I've had to try and stop two tonnes of Mercedes. I still think that the discs should last longer than 10K, after all, they are designed and manufactured to be suitable for the car with no mention of driving style.
I am slowly coming around to your way of thinking regarding O.E. parts sir.
The tight assed Scotsman/Paisley man in me however, cringes at the price, although my bigger concern is what happens if they too only last 10K, is there an underlying issue as yet undiagnosed?

Lots of talk here about you being a 'spirited' driver. Nobody has asked if you're a 'safe' driver and I often wonder if the two are really compatible. Better safe than spirited away perhaps?!

That type of front bearing is utilising the hub of a fwd model minus the drivesghaft. You often see fwd cars and vans using the same idea on the rear bearings. Sometimes there will be a stub axle, sometimes a bolt straight through from the back.

As I said earlier, one overheating event can ruin a disc, irrespective of mileage covered. I think the mark on your discs could be the tempering colours of steel (light straw 200°c to blue 320°c). You've had them hot

I would like to think I was "spirited" however, the talk was about driving in a "spirited" manner.
Personally I believe that there is a time and a place for everything, one drives to the conditions with consideration for other road users at all times. Just because one drives in a spirited manner does not make them unsafe or dangerous.
The goal is to make progress in a safe, smooth, efficient manner.
I am proud of my capabilities and know my limitations. Many and various driving courses over the years have rubbed my nose in my limitations, lol. "Every day's a school day" to quote one instructor.
I would not knowingly endanger another human being.
I agree completely that it is "better safe, than spirited away"

I've had others hot and hotter (on a track day) without any issue, this is what makes me think there may be an underlying undiagnosed problem.
I just want to get to the bottom of this.
However, if the brakes won't stand up to the occasional thrashing the car will be gone.
I'm not ready to drive Miss Daisy yet and I had a higher expectation of Mercedes Benz quality.

It's a bit harsh to blame MB when you've fitted aftermarket parts.

Smart + others :)
We changed a set of non branded discs and pads last week for “pulsing”, it was that bad it made you head nod :D. They looked only a few months old.

It's a bit harsh to blame MB when you've fitted aftermarket parts.

Point taken and acknowledged Alistair, can you see my irritation and frustration peeking through?
The car has only done 33K miles after all.

Since writing that, I've had a nights sleep which has helped me consider my options.

My frustration results in having three issues to deal with at the same time, just when I had saved up for my planned remap (again) so, for the time being that won't happen (again). :(

The order of priority for the repairs has also changed, with the self leveling lights being the most important (living out in the country side has some downsides too), it's important to see where you are going after all, fortunately I can drive around the brake issue for the time being. The bubble in the paint work on the rear wheel arch will just have to wait.

My plan of action is to buy O.E. discs and get the calipers stripped down, cleaned and greased.

I am at present on my third set of front discs during my ownership which, has been almost one year, the first set being the O.E. Mercedes items that came on the car, the second set which were Delphi units, these were replaced under warranty after only three months on the car (approx 3K miles), and the third set also being Delphi items obviously, as the warranty replacements.

At the third replacement I also had the calipers stripped, cleaned and greased with new O.E. pins and bushes fitted at the same time, at the technicians behest, to rule out any potential caliper issues.

This lasted for approx, 10K, and now I'm back to where I started. :(

So, O.E. parts this time, I'm seriously considering new caliper(s) as I'm concerned that one or both may be sticky and causing the discs to over heat.

Time for the second mortgage approaches.

Cars, great fun when all is going well and, a total pita when the problems ensue.
