Car went into what felt like limp mode yesterday. No acceleration or kick down. Today, my local garage (not Merc experts I don't think) came up with fault code 2513-001 which indicates a problem with the inlet port motor. The garage cancelled the code and said to see if it returns. Car was just the same as I drove home so it is something which is not just going to go away!. This seems a fairly common problem and to be honest there seem to be lots of problems with Mercs for so called quality cars (this is my first and probably my last Merc). Anyway, I think there are several possible causes - what is the quickest and cheapest way to work out exactly what is wrong? Any help would be much appreciated - I live in Lincoln

how many people think a 10 year old motor with the power of a 2 pence Chinese toothbrush that's been trying to move 75k miles worth of soot and oil mist baked in to the port at 300c might really have just given up under the strain?

Cheapest is go to a Merc specialist to get it properly diagnosed. Port motors are a common failure.

You could try putting a 4.7k ohm resistor (20p ish) into the middle two terminals of the inlet port shutoff motor . This tricks the inlet port motor to think it is still connected and may get you out of trouble for pennies , especially as you have fallen out of love with the car :D

Many thanks indeed for the responses and the graphic photos Botus. The car is booked in for diagnosis on Tuesday.

that photo was of a BMW, but gives an idea why the motor has a hard life, here's why you need to clean the EGV

Been to local Merc specialist today - Forrest Motors. Fault 2513 confirmed. They say the swirl motor itself is working but flaps will be dirty - they never try to clean them apparently. Here is what I was told: there is an oil leak - from a pipe and maybe from within the turbo. Oil has spilt onto the connector and sprayed down the rear of that area. To pinpoint the parts needed to repair, they would need to strip everything down - 4 hours work apparently so about £300 in labour. This is something they sort regularly and fit a 'kit' i.e. all the parts required in a bundle from the local MB dealer which includes the manifold with a swirl motor, gaskets, pipes etc. Looking at £1800 and if a new turbo is required £2500 all in. So having a think about this and seeing if I can find a local MB enthusiast or expert hobby mechanic to help or having a go at this myself with a friend or trade it in in case there are other problems lurking. Do the new parts have to be coded in? If yes, then would I have to get the car to a MB dealer?

Car repaired last Thursday! Star Motor Services in Reading did a great job. They confirmed the diagnosis, fitted a new port motor, new seal, and sorted out the manifolds. Cost £520. There are so called MB Specialists and MB Specialists - Star Motors in Reading are MB Specialists. Happy to recommend them based on this experience.
