This started out of the blue, when the drivers side window is lowered it is making a strange knocking sound. It is booked in for a service soon, but just wondered what inside could be the cause, it only does this during the lowering movement.

Most likely a window regulator - the teeth wear on the regulator and so there is play between it and the electric motor cog gear. It's more common shutting the window those last few inches - thats for older cars. New one's use cables but there are still plenty of gears to lose teeth...

Ok thanks, if I was more car minded I would have a go at fixing, but I wouldn't have a clue where to start!!!

Window regulator as per David above, can be an easy replacement or can be a PITA, I've done a few on various cars, all worked fine in the end but some really fought me getting the door trim and old regulator out (and not breaking the glass whilst doing it...).

Ok thanks, not for me then, with my current levels of stress and impatience I'm liable to put my foot through the glass.
