Hello and welcome

If it’s a taxi, why the “low” miles? What’s the MOT history show for the mileage?

If the duplex chain is noisy then it needs looking at.

I've had it 3 and a half years from 30000. Serviced twice a year

How urgent we talking . What I'm pondering is it worth getting fixed if need be or time to trade for another car ?

Hi,

It isn't a duplex chain on the OM651 engine.

The urgency is dependent on how bad it is. You certainly don't want it to snap !!

If the gear cogs and tensioner are OK it is a matter of linking the new chain to the old and winding it on. There is still a good bit of dismantling and re-fitting to be done though but it isn't an engine out job.

Whether you do it or trade the car in is your decision. Did your mechanic give you an estimate of the cost involved?

Hi,

I don't know how much it costs. There is a good bit of labour involved.
However, it would be worth getting a second quote from a MB specialist who has done the job before.

Where do you live buddy , so someone can recommend a good Merc independent who can hopefully shave a few hundred off that bill if it's just the chain

My 250 cdi has rattled on start-up from around 20k when i bought it, no better/no worse 90k later. sometimes it is louder than others, but consistent.
