What one do I go by

"After start" resets after every journey so it is only the mpg for the current trip, "after reset" covers multiple trips until you rest the counter.

One is longer term the other (after start) is your last trip. Both are relevant!

Agree, mine is consistently 3 mpg out from stated. Real mpg is always worse than displayed.

I've never checked mine (accuracy) but then, I don't really care.

As above, however "After Start" will not reset just by turning key off and on. It requires a significant time lapse with ignition off (not checked exactly but over an hour). This enables trips to be measured where you may take a rest break or fuel stop.
Both counters can be manually reset using the reset button.

Mine has been 8% more optimistic for the last 16 years!

Woefully inaccurate on short journeys (as you would expect) but very accurate over long distance touring of 500 miles (both measured brim to brim)
