For the past couple of months the engine randomly cuts out when stationary or starts →revs up and either cuts out instantly or slowly with the whole car shaking. Also whilst driving it feels like it's suffocating i.e not the normal amount of power readily available (if that makes sense).

This issue is very random. I could drive the whole day without any problems but on another day constantly cuts out, but it fires up instantly.

I have replaced the breather pipes, air filter and had a stab at cleaning the throttle plate in situ.the Now thinking of removing it and doing a proper clean. The fuel filter isn't too old and my mileage is very low 5000m a year, but will clean that also.

Anything else I could try before giving up and taking it to my "friendly" indie?

Thanks.

I think that you'll be visiting an indie if the problem is intermittent.
A faulty cam sensor will cause the engine to cut out, but it doesn't always cause rough running, instead as it fails the engine will cut out when hot and restart when cold.
Another culprit would be a faulty MAF, but that usually causes rough running most of the time.

I don't think it's the Cam Sensor because it starts back up straight away i.e no waiting time needed to cool down. The Sensor it's about 4 months old though it might be poor quality product from ECP.

I suspect air leak but having changed all the breather pipes don't know where else to look.Fitted a new air filter from MB last month and notice a gap of about 1cm when in the holder. Don't know if this is normal. Never noticed it before.

I was wrong.
Bit the bullet and took it to the regular Indi I use. No fault codes showed up but at his suggestion changed the CPS and so far touch wood issue is gone.
Pleasant surprise was that he didn't charge me for the test.

check the fuel valve regulator and sensor at the end of the high pressure rail near the bulk head, can get bunged up causing fuel starvation, a good dose of Stanadyne from dieselpartsdirect.co.uk will help to keep the fuel line and injectors clean

Is it the one next to the battery under the rear seat?

Do you have a picture or a link to one of this valve regulator & sensor?
Thanks.

No.
It is integrated into the K40 relay module in the fuse box under the hood.

Yes did that last year when the problem started following this guide.

Visually all solder points looked good and shiny but my soldering iron wasn't powerful enough to do a proper job.Maybe I need to have another go.

Found it. Will check when I have time. Browsing the internet this Valve Regulator seems a good suspect. Thanks.

Thanks. IMG_20190502_150059.jpg

Start at one end of the u-bending fuel rail. Feel below the rail. You are looking for a small saucepan looking thing attached to the fuel rail.

Thanks for your reply.

Just tried but unfortunately didn't find anything. Could this be it?

Forgot to mention before.Sometimes when this happens I hear a loud phuss sound like when a lorry breaks.

Yes, thats what they look like.
But to be sure, can you see any connection to the fuel carrying part.
Also, any part number you can read on it.

Does the W210 suffer from ECU/loom faults, dry joints etc? It's obviously getting on now, I may of course be barking up TWT.

That's not it. That looks like the variable intake operating diaphragm.
The M112 and M113 fuel pressure regulator is integrated into the fuel filter housing.

Thanks for clearing it up. If it's integrated then I have no choice but to buy a whole filter.
I know it's recommended to buy parts from the dealer but since it's guess work can I get away with a cheaper brand? Have already spent about £500 for this problem.

My W215 CL500 had a similar issue and I changed the MAF and it is completely sorted now.

The engine ran well most of the time without any roughness but when cold would sometimes just cut out.

Turns out the Ford Ranger MAF is the same Bosch part number as the MAF on mine. Bought one for fault finding for £17 and problem solved.
