Interesting to hear how his early 'Received BBC' accent has defaulted back to his native Doncaster twang in more recent Years, bought my first diesel car in 1984, a Ford Escort Estate, soon sold it on, great economy I recall but just took too much time to get wherever I was going :D

Ironic that even then VW were supposedly making the most environmentally friendly car available.

WTF is that accent? And I'd thought it wasn't possible for me to despise him any further.

Made before the quantum leap of common rail diesel engines. When Alfa Romeo introduced the first one in 1996 everyone else was left behind in their wake (or smoke). Most paid Fiat to use the system and design their own engines, some used Fiat engines (eg. Vauxhall, Saab) . VW however decided to go their own way with their PD engine. It could be a troublesome old thing and they caved in after around six years and built a common rail engine. Possibly he start of all their problems as they played catch up?

I owned one of those mk2 gtd golfs, 1988. A model that was never released in the uk back then.
Inherited it from a german friend at 10 years old, drove it for another 10 years and spent absolutely nothing on repairs, just maintenance. 225,000 and still on same clutch, alternator, starter etc. Possibly the most reliable car ever ?

I've had a PD engine and by all accounts they were somewhat unrefined but strong and they could last.

Except we know that then as now it's not true.
Agreed, if i remember rightly, back then it was all about the hole in the ozone layer... whatever happened to that ?

Still there (and made worse by NOx) but the decided to focus on CO2, even though NOx is apparently over 300 times worse!

His plummy accent had to be hidden when it became popular to sound like Ray Winstone. Laddishness and his tendency to explode caravans were affectations, but he's reputedly been the highest paid journalist in Britain for many years. He understands broadcasting and making money.

Still there but it IS closing. Slowly, but it’s happening.
