Just seen this, find an mgf/Land Rover/lotus specialist

In lotus circles you’re talking about £500 to repair (incl skim and liner height checks)

I’m a long way from you in Newcastle but www.britishsportscarservices.co.uk speak to Dan I’m sure he would do it if you had the rac/aa recover you...

Failing that Craig Moncrieff in Edinburgh

Otherwise post a request on Scottish elises...

Mine mildly failed and was redone at about 40k it’s been brilliant since and I thrash it silly :)

Expansion caps can be an issue. I used to change mine every 3 years regardless as they weakened over time. Those leaking under pressure and the under car pipes leaking are two thinks to check for. You could replace the cap, refill it and run it to check for any leaks. Make sure you do not run it up past normal temperature though, so be eagle eyed on the gauge. It is easy to warp the head with over heating on these.

The likes of Dave / Kayleigh and Russel do travel the country doing this, I believe they just charge mileage over a certain distance. Try contacting one of them to see.

I think they're probably one of the best out there. Very friendly and Dave is a top class mechanic period. Kayleigh is a friend on facebook and I cannot recommend them enough.

You could (if you have breakdown cover that will take you anywhere and with onward travel) fill it up with coolant drive it for a short while away from your house then get the breakdown company to take it to a garage (that you've already spoken to) to fix the head. You then get the breakdown company to take you home. :D

When the car is ready get a cheap bus / train to the garage and drive it home.

You need to get this tested to actually diagnose the problem. What you described earlier in the thread is not a typical or common head gasket failure on this type of engine. On any engine when a head gasket fails the system pressurises quickly from cold and the weakest point fails and leaks coolant. Not over pressurising until hot is often (not always) caused by a cracked head.Your engine symptoms are of a simple system leak that leaks when the system is hot at normal pressure (around 18psi)
The usual very common hg failure on k series is between the oil feed and the water jacket. The oil fills the cooling system and pours out of the header tank as thick brown goo.
Take your car to a decent garage and tell them you have a water leak and ask them to check it out. Don't ever tell a garage what you think is wrong with a car and what you want done to it because its down to you if you're wrong. Same thing applies with supplying your own parts, if they fail its your problem.
