Long post but could be useful for W208 owners!

So following on from my introduction post, which in summary said I bought a W Reg 2000, 99,000 mile, W208 CLK320 for a gumball rally in August. I have a throttle pedal issue it seems, where it’s going into limp mode and juddering. Such a shame as the car is ace otherwise.

I finally have found a reader that will scan codes so thought this may be useful for other w208 people. So first up, here’s what I bought and which worked, and which DIDN’T.

This car DOESN’T have a typical OBD port under the steering column. It’s a round 38 pin port near the air con unit under the bonnet. So you need a “38 pin to 16 pin OBD adapter”, £8 from amazon or eBay.

I bought a “Launch C Reader 319 OBD2 reader” from Amazon, £22. With the round adapter fitted, it does NOT work on this car. It shows the number of codes stores, but doesn’t tell you the code. Pointless.

I then bought a Streetwize OBD2 reader from Toolstation, £24. Looks cheapo but DOES work and will read codes just fine (needs the amazon adapter still). Very surprised.

So I have 10 errors stored as follows, the car is going to an Indy but they have a 3 week wait..

P0170 - Fuel trim bank 1.
P0173 - Fuel trim bank 2.
P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire detected.
P0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire detected.
P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfire detected.
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected.
P0300 - Multiple cylinder misfire det.
P1542 - Manufacturer Control.
P0150 - O2 sensor circuit bank 2 sensor 1.
P0130 - O2 sensor circuit bank 1 sensor 1.

Am I right thinking P1542 is the pedal sensor inside the car, built into the pedal itself..?

The rest, god knows what they are?!

So the orange one is the £24 streetwise from Toolstation, or actually anywhere online. The other one is the so called superior reader, it didn’t work.

I take it that will be a 6 cylinder engine , I notice that cylinders 5 and 6 have no misfire showing , could you swap the spark plug coil packs around and see if the cylinder faults change ....I'm wondering if it's a coil pack problem ?
Hopefully your Indy will be able to pin the faults down with MB Star diagnostics

V6 yes.

Hopefully they’ll pin point it, like I say, could be anything. I’m more concerned about the throttle issues - especially if I need to strut shopping around for the part

You may well have additional codes not reported by the scanner as it's only generic.
To get all codes you need an MB specific reader.

I'd be looking at live values. There are fuel trim faults both sides and O2 faults both sides. I'd look at MAF values and go from there.

Hmm...since you are getting a P0170 & P0173 as well as all the others which do look as if they are likely related could it be as LostKiwi suggests the Mass Air Flow sensor?

You can try cleaning it...about £7 for a tin of spray cleaner from Amazon and if that doesn't work replace it.

Budget from around £25 upwards depending on where you purchase and whether or not you want an OEM part.

It may seem like an obvious question to ask but is this car converted to run on LPG? The reason for the question is that these are the typical codes that a badly set up conversion will present. If the answer is no then the previous replies are on the money, a faulty MAF and/or a manifold air leak will cause all of these faults. Use your code reader to erase the faults and monitor the order in which they re-occur, if you're lucky it may give you cause/effect. The pedal code may be a red herring or it may present as the primary fault.

Hi. Thanks to everyone for the replies already by the way. No not converted to LPG. I’m sure the pedal fault right as the symptoms feel and sound like what everyone else had when theirs failed. That’s being done this week hopefully and then more than likely a new MAF, and then reset and see how we go. no lights on the dash at all, which is good. I’m jus hoping it’s not coil packs and plugs, heard they’re a pricey job on this. 1 week in though, and really liking the car :)

does it have coil packs ? (no HT leads straight on top of the plug) they die and give those codes

you could swap to another cyl, if dead / dying the code will move with it....

Unlikely 4 coil packs would fail at the same time.
It's an M112 engine so 6 coil packs feeding 12 plugs using short ignition leads.

UPDATE! All fixed!!

So.

It wasn’t the throttle pedal sensor ( I changed it and it was no different).

It wasn’t the throttle position sensor.
Limp mode still there.

They swapped all (12!) spark plugs, the misfire was still there.

They swapped coil packs around, misfire still there (on same cylinders).

Swapped injectors around. Misfire STILL there (in same cylinders).

New Bosch MAF, voila. Fixed!! The kickdown is working when I floor it, there is no limp mode and it’s nice and smooth.

What a result. I had cheap labour at the garage hence going old school swapping stuff round first. £200 in parts, £100 labour.

+£54 for the scanner - at least you’ve now got it sorted.

It shows that maybe the cheaper scanners can actually end up costing you more in the long run if they can’t “delve” the MB codes to the same level as a dedicated scanner.

I suppose at least you now have a spare throttle pedal and position sensor spare.

Don’t forget to start a gumball thread so we can all follow you :) good luck on the rally
