I have just picked up a very nice summer fun convertible, and want to insure it just for the summer months. I intend to lay it up each winter.
Has anyone had experience of short term cover (say six months each year)? I'm wondering what the drawbacks are as well as the advantages. The car would be Sorned and garaged during the winter.

I have regularly used seasonal insurance with my boat - it's standard practice for coastal craft - but not yet for a car.

I imagine you buy a year's insurance, then freeze the policy. I thought about doing that myself but the occasional sunny day weakens my resolve.

I only use my 124 in the summer months, like you intend to and on sorn for 6 months and have it insured as a classic with an agreed mileage of 3000 on an annual policy My limited research would suggest that you will save either nothing , close to nothing, or worse still less than nothing by using temp cover. An annual policy also allows the car to build up its own NCD,

What if your car is stolen or the garage roof collapse on the car when you dont have it insured? What car are you thinking of buying, it might be cheap to insure, my SL500 only costs £187 a year to insure anyway.

This is what I've bought. A MazdaMX5 2litre Sport. Road tax is £300 a year, although insurance is fairly cheap at just over £200 annually.
It really is intended just as a toy, and would only be used as the whim or weather dictates.

If I can halve the road tax, and do something close with the insurance, while just using it for the summer months, I will be more than pleased.

Possibly, as suggested, I could leave the insurance in place permanently - but then I'm saving just £150 road tax. It's in such pristine condition that I don't want to spoil it by using it all year round, and the absence of winter tax would force me to do that - as well as giving me an excuse to keep it polished and fettled! It really is just an old man's indulgence.

Looks nice, perhaps it’s my eyes but it doesn’t look like an SLK though :D

Apologies for the foreign vehicle. The price and condition were right, so I couldn't resist it. The SLK I sold two years ago was full of rust - and these MX5's also suffer the same way - hence the desire to keep it under over during the 'salting' season.

When you SORN it for the winter, change your insurance to fire and theft so it's covered while garaged. Specialist insurers like ClassicLine will do this for a summer toy!

Hadn't thought of that. Would it make any difference to the premium - and any ncd earned?
I'm coming to the conclusion that taxing it for six months, and leaving the insurance in place all year, is the best way forward.
I like tinkering, and having the car stuck in my garage for the worst half of the year gives me plenty of time to tinker!
