No doubt the ease of this potential income stream makes them attractive but you can't help feeling people will trickle through the areas with them then "give it some beans" when out.

I do feel the selfish ones who impose their racket on us should be brought to book.

yup.most of us been there..... we are the lucky ones..survivors .. dont think one should be able to get a car permit without riding a bike for a yr or at least doing a bike course so many d/h,s in cars understand the ramifications of pulling out in front of bike on wet/icy roads.. whilst at it. its time pedal bike owners over 18 paid some road tax as well we keep HAVING to modify the roads for THEIR benefit.

I agree that they should but how does this system do that ? as usual they are replacing police officers with technology

Cyclists should pay less tax, as they are likely to be healthier, and thus less of a burden on NHS resources. Added to which, by choosing not to use cars, they are producing less pollution, thus keeping others healthier. So even less tax.

And once again, your so-called "road tax", does not get spent on roads.

They changed it to VED so they couldn't be accused of double charging for roads with Toll Roads.

|Seems like waste of time. Nobody took any notice.

The fact remains, most cyclists(over 80% according to the figures I read) also own cars. Anytime they decide to cycle instead, you should be happy. Whilst choosing to cycle they are doing less damage to "your" roads.

They're not my roads (unfortunately...)

I don't have issues with cyclists as long as they follow the highway code... Running red lights and pedestrian crossings isn't acceptable, having a child knocked down and their arm broken because the cyclist didn't feel they needed to stop is wrong.

I do have issues with councils spending many thousands of pounds on pointless paint, cyclists will ride where they like - putting paint on the pavement or road asking them to ring their bell and be considerate in sharing with pedestrians is an absolute waste of money. The cyclists that are considerate don't need reminding as they're already doing the right thing, the ones who aren't considerate already don't suddenly get a eureka moment because the council added some paint to the pavement.

The councils are doing it solely so they can say they're doing their bit for sustainable transport - as they say "the road to hell is paved with good intentions"

Hear hear Russell. I was up in Scotland last year near Fort William. There were 3 cyclists riding down the road causing tailbacks. Just 10 feet to their left was a well marked cycle path separated from the road by a nice grass strip.

never the less cyclist DO use roads that I pay to use and these roads HAVE to be MAINTAINED and often MODIFIED to suit cyclists so i cant see why cyclists should be using them gratis as you say motorists pollute and WE sure are paying for that.

They do pay. Over 80% own cars. So the vast majority of cylists are not using the roads gratis. I'm sorry, I don't see how I can make this any clearer, but I won't resort to caps lock shouting. As I said, they should pay less tax, as less of a burden on the NHS. Maybe a fixed amount of tax rebate per mile cycled, funded from the "road tax".

good luck with that !!!! i would simply impose a £40.00 a yr for over 18,s bike permits. and the same penalty that car owners pay for not having it ..under 18,s and OAP,s sorry about cap lock !! exempt.

I agree, but have you actually looked at the figures? It's something like 0.8% of pedestrian deaths involve cyclists. It's hard to believe, in the light of the massive media coverage the vanishing small number of incidents receive.
