my sl600 was the same, even a little more in traffic on a hot day at times i found myself hoping the traffic would soon clear, it dropped somewhat on a clear road.

Mine, although not a SL 600 sits at around 83°C interesting is what the owner's manual says about it;
Coolant Temperature Gauge
Under normal operating conditions and with the specified coolant level, the coolant temperature may rise to 120° C. At high outside temperatures and when driving uphill, the Coolant Temperature may rise to the end of the scale.

Mine is a little more concerning....never had this instruction / warning in any of my BMW manuals...

During severe operating conditions, e.g.

stop-and-go city traffic, the coolant temperature

may rise close to approx. 266°F

(130°C).

The engine should not be operated with

the coolant temperature over 248°F

(120°C). Doing so may cause serious engine

damage which is not covered by the Warranty

As a general rule of thumb I don't get concerned as long as the temperature is 100 or less. At 105 I get nervous and 110 switch to allow to cool.

Both my cars sit at just over the 90 and then never budge even the slightest .
