Hi folks,

Just bought or rather rescued quite a nice car as above. Above the suspension upwards all round the car is in decent condition, the suspension is quite corroded and N?S rear knocks over the slightest bump.

I've ordered a full set of the rear suspension arms ( 4 each side ) but I could do with some advice on various brands of springs and shocks. Been to merc today for the part number and typed those into Autodoc then tons of part manufacturers come up. I don't want to buy the dirt cheap ones but then don't want to pay merc prices, their quote for 4 springs and 4 shocks this morning nearly knocked me out ( £893.04 supply only) , I can get 15% off that but still strong money!!!

I'm wanting to replace all of the springs, shocks arms, tie rods etc.

I can clearly get them all for well under half price of merc prices.

Front shock part No A 124 320 32 30

Front Spring part No A 123 321 22 04

For the rear, what brands do people recommend out of these rear spring manufactuers - part No = A 124 324 11 04

Maplo
Suplex
Monroe
Meyle
Kilen

And for the rear shocks part No = A 124 326 23 00

Japan parts
KYB
Bilstein
Ashika
Optimal
Mapco
Meyle
Kamoka

Or any other brands people can recommend please would help.

If anyone knows a decent place to buy from, let me know, want to avoid ECP as not much info shows for my car.

All part numbers above came off the merc parts dept at my local dealer.

Thanks everyone

Springs I'd always use genuine. Aftermarket often don't sit properly.

I've just had a 2 year old / 12K cheap after market front damper fail the MOT. Badged as Monroe from Autodoc.
Previously had similar on-line cheap front springs on my S210, they lasted about 2 months.

If new parts are expensive ,then you can try using preowned . I would go good second hand original before i would have any aftermarket parts But springs are a must and dealers will know the right spring to fit . Most all the parts i fit to my car are genuine Mercedes .I do like to purchase new MB parts if i can.

Thanks for the replies currently.

Does anyone know of a preferred merc dealer for cheaper parts than the people I have dealt with at Whitefield Merc?

I believe Mercedes used Lemofors as original parts on suspension maybe? I find it really scandalous that they want to charge me £893.04 for 4 springs and 4 shock absorbers. That surely can't be right. I didn't pay that for the whole car and probably at best a 116,000 mile 1995 E300D in above average clean condition is only worth around £2500 maximum from my research.

If the car is a keeper then putting good known parts on it will pay you back in the long run, okay doesn’t have to be Mercedes own (could try MB Grangemouth) but it you show it love it will reply you eventually, plus prices on 124’s seem to be on the up

So far had 3 broken springs on my CLK at around (OEM) £60 each.
Can’t be very good quality the car has only 78K, just like low grade Artico.

Sadly parts cost bears no relationship to the vehicles used value....

Google the shock absorber part numbers and look on the AutoDoc website. Choose Sachs or Bilstein; original for many MBs.

For springs, I recommend the genuine items, from MB. Pricey, yes, but you may save money on fitting/adjustment costs.

For other ball joints and mountings, choose Lemfoerder if you can't run to MB. AutoDoc supplied 90% of all my non-MB parts.

For MB parts, try: https://www.teile-profis.de/page_3_1.php.

This is what I did on my 300CE and, in the words of my son, "It handles like a new car".
