Hi All
After a bit of advice, please.

Have a c220 w204 estate 2010 model with the om651 engine. It has covered 220000 miles - got it when it had covered 120000.

I have read about the timing chain issues, with the rattle at startup. Mine has had this for a little while, although have not done anything about it. On a recent trip back from France the engine management light came on and when taken to my local independent they diagnosed a DPF fault - in that it was at 300%.

I don’t know if they have STAR, but they “cleaned” and reset the fault. Having driven less than 20 miles the engine light has come back on. I have contacted the independent and they believe it has come on as the timing is “probably” out due to a stretched timing chain. I assume this is feasible.

Their “go To” tech isn’t in till Wednesday to discuss fully, but they are suggesting a timing chain replacement - I assume with tensioner (s) , guide (s) and “toothed wheels?”. The suggested cost is £1600........

At this stage they don’t think it is an engine out job.

My questions:
A. Is the assumption of a stretched chain affecting timing and therefore DPF not regenerating (their assumption) correct?
B. Is £1600 reasonable? I know it is variable with what has to be done.

Any guidance gratefully received.
Many thanks
Scott

Give Steve at Avantgarde be Bristol a call but £1600 sounds a bit steep to me.
Before doing anything get codes read on Star.

Hello and Welcome,

As per above, get the error codes read and see form there - without that it's an expensive guess

Firstly, Welcome!

Secondly, in answer to your questions:

A) if there is a current timing fault code, then yes, this will prevent regen, but you need to ensure that this is the case, and they arent just chasing their tails with a DPF code.
b) Its a bit on the high side, but not too far out of the ball park considering the labour involved.

LK, Blobcat, Umblecumbuz and Alexanderfoti thank you for your responses. I will give Steve a call tomorrow, need to confirm with the current independent what diagnostics they use - I suspect it isn’t’t STAR.
Cheers

Sounds like it's worth getting a new tensioner fitted while it's in.
