Okay. Well I ordered and received a breaker bar however I did not think about what I was ordering before I ordered it. I had been able to crank the engine with difficulty using my girlfriend's late husband's ratchet bar. It was hard work with the short length of the bar but do able. The breaker bar is longer at 750mm, however, there is no ratchet!! I wasn't expecting that and with very little space down by the crank pulley, one has to continually remove the socket and reposition again. So, another question to ask. Is there such a thing as a breaker bar with a ratchet facility built in? around the 750mm length mark and made of Chrome Vanadium?

No, not that I have ever seen purely because the ratchet would be a weak point and more than likely break under the pressure one can exert.

That was my understanding. I've only used a breaker bar to move a tight bolt, I suppose they weren't designed to crank engines. How much torque does an engine take to crank anyway?

But so far the ratcheted bar I have used has been strong enough to crank the engine.
However an interesting viewpoint.

You shouldn't need a long bar if the injectors or glow plugs are removed.
I can turn over a V8 using a standard 1/2" ratchet from the socket set.

I thought the idea of the long bar was to see if you could get the engine to crank ie., to check it wasn't seized. As it's now turning over I shouldn't bother with one as mission is accomplished. The thing to do now is to see if you can turn it over on the starter and a well charged battery with the injectors or glow plugs out. I think I read that your starter went pop a while back ? so that's the logical thing to concentrate on next.

No. I was on about the icarsoft diagnostics scanner from LJM. As far as the starter motor is concerned I would get a refurbished one from Ebay for £40. The scanner was originally £136 from LJM Car diagnostics. Order placed on Monday or Tuesday this week. For some reason now arriving from Hong kong via Dhl.
