Today i had a small bump in a car park both cars reversing from opposite sides and turned into each other at very low speed. rear bumper to rear bumper. Other car was an Audi S3, myself and other drivers partner looked at both cars, I can see no damage to my bumper the other guy said he had a paint flake off, after exchanging details I asked what he wanted to do, to me there was nothing to report but he said he would get a quote and call me before his partner called her insurance.
As I drove home I thought does he want me to pay for some repair without involving insurance? to me it's nothing to repair, at worst a polish over. If they want to involve the insurance companies it will be 50 50 and we will both get an insurance hike next renewal.
Not sure how to proceed now as my photo of their car does not show the full reg which I thought it had or his partners name, only their insurance company and his mobile number

Insurance companies love this type of accident for the reason's you've already identified, if you didn't agree joint and separate liability at the scene, I would send my insurance Co photo's and a statement to that effect, that is of joint liability, for record purposes, then if the criminals attempt to claim against you, at least your version will already be on record.

you would both get a claim hike next year and this will be classed as a claim. other party seems to be lacking sense if he goes down insurance route. If anything a smart repair would be best if he is so concerened and perhaps you share that cost!

As above.
No injury and a smart repair, don't bother the insurance company.

But keep the photos and any correspondence so that if they come back in two years time, you (and your insurers) would then have something.

If you were both at fault (you and he were both reversing at the same time) then when he contacts you tell him this, and state that you will deal with your own damage and he can deal with his.

As you are both equally liable the only fair way would be to find out the cost of repair for both cars and split it between you.

Shame you both didn't agree to both walk away and sort your own damage avoiding the insurance companys.
Body shops are reasonable when it comes to non insurance cash jobs.. I was quoted £400 for a new wing and repaint front bumper but 3rd party decided that was to much and wanted to go through insurance.. then it cost £4800 in total !!!!
Everyone is on the take in the insurance scheme, the body shops charge a small fortune for items not even used or needed and everyone else also wants a cut of the pie.. But the worst part is the following 6 years (to date) of constant phone calls, up to 3 a day just after the accident trying to make you claim for compensation.

Agree, When ever you walk into a body shop the first thing they ask is it insurance or cash!

They have to ask that because there are so many rules for insurance jobs. But ffs - in this day and age, given the outlined scenario, two well-mannered people ought to be able to sort it out amicably and avoid the creeping tentacles of your "friendly" insurance mafia! If either one is actually to blame they know it - and should man up and get it sorted for a lot less than any claims procedure will cost!

Were still locked in the Morethan debacle they are useless and the other driver an older woman is a liar.

All they want to do is box you off with a lucrative all round (for them) 50/50 settlement.

Thank goodness for dashcams.

all the advice above is good.
When the guy calls you state that as you were both to blame and if he wants to pursue cost of repair with you and not with insurance, then you will only pay 50% of costs to his car, then tell him that he will have to pay 50% costs of your car.
If they are reasonable, they will just have it done and nothing further.

I agree and you must be spitting blood over this "non event". But be careful, Bill - you are supposed to report ANY accident to your insurer even if you agree you to walk away from it (so they can screw you! at renewal time!) and if the other party (who seems to be rather stupid) has informed her insurers then it's already in the system and so are you, unfortunately.

when my daughter run her little Aygo into a tree, there was no one else involved and no roadside furniture damaged, hence i got it home and put two new wings and a bumper on it, sprayed it and it was back on the road, if i had informed insurance company the policy cost would have gone up even though we had not claimed.
As it happens, a month later she hit the back of a Mercedes estate (kept telling her her distance was too short !!!!) and we had to go via insurance, cost went up £130 right away, and it was a write off (what a waste of time !!!).
Good thing is in her new one, she is getting the distance correct, learnt the hard way though.

Our daughter was the same but as the years have rolled on (she passed the big Hawaii 5-0) she's allowed a better distance.
- But she still drives too fast although her licence is clean!

A friend of mine fell off his motorbike greenlining and broke his collar bone which meant up to 6 weeks off work.
His insurer talked him into accident protection (he gets paid in the event of an accident) and was told it covered him for broken body parts.. So he rang them up to see what he could claim, only to find out it only covered getting blinded or death.
Claiming whilst dead could be rather difficult so that was the end of that (so he thought)
Came to insure his car and now it flags up he has been involved in an accident so his premiums have gone up !
You got to love insurance companies !

Unfortunately we all have to use them to comply with the law, so over and barroll come to mind.
You can understand somewhat why some drivers chose not to insure, particuly the young, but then it only compounds the problem

Which is why, when my mate did exactly the same thing, told people he'd fallen off a push bike. :coffee:
