So, typical to the W211 i have another very faing knocking noise coming from the front left wheel.
The TOP and BOTTOM ball joints have been replaced.
Ive jacked the car up to rocked the wheel and i have zero play in the 9 and 3 position, but i do have a little bit of play in the 12 and 6 postion (top and bottom).
Ive ruled out wheel bearing as i would of thought the whole wheel would rock and i havent been getting any humming noises at speed.
Also the sound only emerges at around 5mph while driving over a rutted car park.
Like i said top and bottom ball joints have been replaced and are working perfectly.
Any suggestions on where to look specifically would be great!

Movement in the 12 - 6 plane can only be balljoints or suspension bushes if there is no movement in the 3 - 9 plane.

Could it possibly be the anti roll bar link?

I checked the coil spring i couldnt see any fractures or breaks anywhere! I thought coil springs made like a twang noise when turning the wheel? Or am i mistaken?

It can do and it might not, depends on how much has broken off

I'll have another look later on when i get home! If it is the spring it didnt look that hard getting it out? Just need to be dam careful with spring compressors!

Jacked the car up took the wheel off, spring was absolutely fine checked the bottom and top of the spring couldnt see anything.
No movement at all on the ball joints or shock absorber!

Are you certain it's not bearing play?
This can sometimes be disguised in the 3/9 position if the pads are firm on the disc.
Long shot, but possible.

The only thing i havent done is try to adjust the wheel bearing, its the first thing im gonna do before i do anything.

Right, its really annoying me now, seems to be sharp bumps at about 5mph is when its really noticeable!
Previously my lower ball joints made a horrible sqeaking noise and they were replaced about 18 months ago or 20ish k miles they surely couldnt of worn out already! And my upper ball joints about 2 years ago and about 33k miles ago, and usually you can see the play in the upper one when the car is jacked up.
Coil springs are definitely not cracked or broken.
So here are my conclusions to what it could be:
Wheel bearing needs adjustment
Upper strut mount
Or possibly shock absorber
Also im thinking wheather the play in the wheel is unrelated because its a very small amount of play!

Had the same on my 211, ended up being the shock absorber, only way to confirm was to swap it left to right and take it from a drive to see if the noise follows, just to note there was no play in the shock either,

Thought it could be! Did you replace them yourself?

Start with the cheapest things first. Remove the droplink one side and see if it still rattles. If not there's your answer. If yes then move to the next thing.

Thanks! I'll give it a go this weekend, everthing seems pretty straightforward to remove on the front
