Hi everyone, I’m struggling to find a definite answer about converting my W220 ABC suspension to coilovers, all I’m finding is Airmatic to coilover kits, will these fit or has anyone got any idea where I can get some answers.

Hi and welcome. Why not keep the ABC?
I would love to but the garage has said I need a number of new parts and the cost is probably going to be pretty high. I want it sitting low too so it doesn’t really bother me putting it on coilovers

How high? We are probably the definitive guide to low cost ABC upkeep. There’s some fool on here with a CL who has replaced 80% of his ABC system over the years...

The garage haven’t come back with a definite price yet but he’s said it would be cheaper and more reliable going down the spring route. Just wondering if yellowspeed coilovers will fit on mine as it says airmatic rand mine is abc

There's someone with a pair of r230s who's done much the same (or so it seems) ;)

Which garage? Are they Sonderklasse suspension specialists..?

It might be cheaper (but it might not) and more reliable (but again, might not)- but it will definitely spoil the ride and handling of the car. The V8/ V12 S Class derivatives were designed around ABC and not an aftermarket coil conversion kit.

To give you an idea...

Pump, £580 from MB.
New struts- £300-700 dependent on type. We also have rebuild resource now.
Valve block rebuild seal kits- £50 per axle.
Flexi line- £300 from MB.

He hasn't fitted coilovers - he's replaced ABC components. That's the preferred route in here as it maintains the best of all worlds. Excellent ride and good handling. There's a reason active suspension was banned in F1!

Craig's your man for ABC repairs.

thanks, this is the type of advice I need, so maybe I’ll be better off repairing the abc and just maintaining it regular. I’m going to take it to a different garage as it seems the guys at this one don’t really want to go down the route of repairing the abc

What garage are you using? We can suggest highly knowledgable indies specialising in ABC.

There is a place I’ve used in South Shields iirc, can’t for the life of me remember the name. They’re German car specialists and have good knowledge of ABC. I’d strongly recommend looking them up first.

i think the whole abc thing depends on the overall value of yr motor .And what you expect of it. as i see it abc is a constant upkeep story. in time effort and money. if you wish to avoid this ,go coil over, you will only do it once. if you crave an original motor and the ultimate of ride/handling fix yr abc.but understand abc is like a high class hooker, put a smile on yr face each time you use it ,BUT will cost you ,and at some point likely let you down....
