Hello I have my other Mercedes e320 2001 it started to rattle and we got concerned. It had been sitting for a long time as we no longer used it due too the rust. We used it for spares and ran it every month to recharge the battery incase it ran out of charge. As the rattle got worse we took the cover off and saw that engine was full of oil. We are thinking of buying another old e320 like this as we have had loads of problems with our 2004. Before we look do you know any way of knowing or checking if this could happen and know why this happens aswell.

Is it oil, or is it more like thick black treacle?
If it's the latter, it points to a leaking injector.
You'll soon see when you remove the engine top covering.

If you also hear a 'chuffing' noise when the engine is running, then this also suggests a leaking injector seal.

Did this hydraulically lock on any piston?

When you say "explosion"...did that happen, or just a misleading title?

I'm confused because the top cover looks like it is in bits. Or, do you mean just "black death", which is easily scraped of with a flat blade screw driver and then have the injector/s reseated.

Just noticed that the bit that seems coated in oil is actually the undercover for the plastic engine cover. SO where is your plastic engine cover? That foamy part should be glued to the plastic part.
Plastic engine cover has been taken off
