If you wanted to find a cheaper M-B or something similar, which was cheaper to run, what would you get/buy?
i.e. Something that did more than 55MPG, was as reliable as a M-B or perhaps one of the newer hatchback styles.
This is in the back of my mind even though I would not come away from M-B now.

Age? Segment? 2nd car? motorway cruiser?

If it's a small hatchback your after I'd recommend a Toyota Yaris, although it is not "as reliable as an MB", it is way way way more reliable than a modern MB ;)

Don't think there is anything other than an MB is there, I've not seen anything ;)

I am looking to buy a used (5 year old) A Class petrol auto, any advice/comments.

Once... Not so much these days.

Still not a patch on the VW though inside. I had a MK5 GTI (2006) up until last week and the wife has a Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo (2017) - the difference is night and day on the interior trim quality. Skoda is all cheap plastic and it just gets worse the lower down the car you go. And that's with 11 years difference between them. Switch gear is comparable though - but don't believe the Skoda is a VW hype IMO.

Friend has a 2014 Skoda Octavia VRS and the build quality and plastics are very good. I certainly don't believe the VW is worth the premium (let alone the A3!).

It could very well be that the Fabia is not representative comparison - the Fabia is based on the Polo is it not?

Some internal engine components on Skodas are plastic when on their cousins, they are metal
They may fail, they may not.....

That's one way they can sell them cheaper - its not the VW or Audi (or Bugatti) badge that costs more.....

They are on VWs and Audi's too. Plastic water pump impellers anyone?
