hi,

After a ESP inoperative Message popped up on the car I bought this machine.

I have taken pictures of all the codes I have found.

Pictures here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/2vr8xg1ju/

Would appreciate it if anyone could help decipher it ;)

Thanks in advance.

You've had a flat battery.
Looks like you may need to recalibrate the steering angle sensor although it's an historic error. There don't appear to be any current errors so clear them all and see if anything comes back.

It does seem like the battery is on its way out. Seems to generally struggle to start after standing a week.

Would this battery be okay?

If I’m not mistaken it’s best to use something like this on Mercedes when changing a battery: Draper EMS 22231 EOBD Memory Saver https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008YFZ91S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EouEDbQQFXR79

Also I believe the CLS May have a secondary battery. Assuming this is in the engine bay close to the windscreen area. Where would be the best place to purchase the correct one of these for a 2008 CLS500.

I’d give MB Grangemouth a call, tell them you’re a member here and you’ll get a decent discount on a battery

The alternator seems to be charging fine. The voltage is around 13.9v when idling.

Good shout. Do they deliver via a courier. Would be to far to travel for me.

They do, quite cheap I understand.

A friend I recommended them to got one delivered free to his local Arnold Clark garage as MB Grangemouth is Arnold Clark as well so you could ask if that’s a possibility.

I’ll give them a call.

Is there any specific procedure When replacing a Mercedes battery on something like a 2008 CLS500, Read something along the lines a new battery needs to be re-programmed onto the car or something or would using the memory saver device linked above avoid this step?

Give MB Grangemouth your VIN and they can ensure you get the correct battery. Delivery is £5 if I recall correctly and free if you can collect from an Arnold Clark dealership.

no the car

from wiki w219.... The car is less practical than the W211 E-Class that it is based on,
2008 facelift Interior changes include: introduction of new COMAND APS NTG 2.5 system,

would explain why I don't reco the fault codes, different electrical system, C216 is the same as mine ….The class is based on the chassis of the W221 S-Class

Okay, Fitted the new battery, Checked all tire pressures are what they should be etc..

But roughly after 100 miles the “ESP inoperative Message” popped up again?

At a shell petrol station as I write this so i’ll check what the code reader says when home.

Any ideas in the meantime?

thanks

look at readings of the ABS sensors....

the car will be drivable… it will be the same as any vehicle that doesn't have it
its a stability thing to help you not lose control in extreme circumstances, drive sensibly and it will never come in to play

just took another glance at some of your fault codes in the first post... most are probably gargbage but if this is still there highly likely to be the cause and or linked... this is a key part of the hardware than allows ESP to do its bit

I’ve had a chance to plug the machine in and these are all the codes I could find.

Also worth mentioning I stopped somewhere for 5 minutes and when I started back up the ESP error vanished? Assuming it’s a intermittent fault?

You may have a wiring problem around the steering column, a clock spring, or the steering angle sensor itself.
As for it resetting, I replaced a front suspension ball joint a while ago and had the ESP warning up until after I had the car tracked again and it then took a while before it finally reset itself after a few miles and restarts.
