w220 new wheel options

Hi all, love the forum and help so far. I have two issues, so I will raise the wheel one first:

I have a 1999 (first of the newer shape) w220 Mercedes s320. It came with 16" wheels which looked crazy small.

I updated them with 17" wheels from the w221 with 235 /55/R17 Michelin tyres.

I am now thinking of a later set of w222 wheels part number: A2224010902; Size: 245 / 50 R18, PCD: 5 x 112 mm, Rim width: 8, Offset: 41

However, I am not sure if the bigger wheels and slightly different offset will cause an issue? I have read on the forum that w222 and w221 wheels should fit the w220 without any issues. Also I believe that 245/50/18 is almost identical tyre size to 245/50/18 too.

Can anyone confirm my assumption and what I have read so far?

Second issue - my aircon is broken . - but I'll list that under a separate topic.

I would say they are absolutely identical.

Check what bolts the w222 uses. Your car is m12/r12 I believe. I have a sneaking feeling w222 will be m14/r14....
You cannot use m14 wheels on an m12 car unless you source special m12/r14 bolts.

17 inch wheels should be shod with 255 55 17, this is standard merc fit

@Paul1948 - on the tyres. Strangely the wheels came with 235/55 r17 tyres from Mercedes. I bought the wheels with the tyres direct as they were from a w221 that wanted to change to a different set of wheels. So got them at a good price. Only considering changing the wheels now to update the look and they are a little corroded in places. I think the w222 wheels could look great on the w220 if they fit fine. Sounds like they will do which is fantastic.

Most people forget about them.
Those are M14/R14. They will not fit your hubs unless your hubs are M14 (but I think they'll be M12). Pull a bolt out and measure the diameter to be sure.

M12/R14 bolts are non standard. You'll need to find a supplier. I got mine from alloy wheels direct but they no longer list them. You may need to get some made up.

There are four standard bolt types used on Mercedes.
M12/R12 - these are an M12 X 1.5 thread with a 12mm radius seat on the wheel.
M14/R14 - these are fitted to later cars from about 2002. M14 X 1.5 thread and 14mm radius seat on the wheel.

Then for aftermarket wheels there are M12 X 1.5 thread with 60 degree taper seat.
M14 X 1.5 thread with 60 degree taper seat.

All these are available in different lengths just to complicate matters. It is not safe to use the wrong type of bolt for the wheel.

To get the correct length put an old bolt through the new wheel. Measure the length that protrudes. The ideal length is 15mm or so. Be careful on first fit to spin the rear wheel to ensure any excess length doesn't catch the rear parking brake components. Bolts can be shortened if necessary.

I would suggest the tire size on 18" wheels should be 245/45/18 to maintain the closest aspect ratio to the original.
