So Dyson have given up the ghost on Electric Cars, he just can't make enough money from them with 50% of his costs going towards the car and all that entails and a massive 50% going on battery development alone, we're just not there with batteries yet are we...

Dyson really needed an automotive partner which would have allowed him to invest solely in the electric/battery side of the design - pity really a partner might have helped achieve the right price point

Did hear the labour costs in Singapore were a factor. Did he not check out why most low labour cost manufacturing, including other automotive assemblers that are looking at EV, in that region is across the Jahor Strait? Will he be selling his flat there?

I doubt it will ever be viable. Energy density is too low, it's manufactured using lots of electricity, is difficult to store safely, extremely dangerous (Challenger or Hindenburg anyone?).... The list goes on....

Mazda tried it with the RX8. It had a range of 62 miles with 110 litre tank stored at 340psi. The engine only developed half the power it did on petrol.

'Across the Jahor Strait ADL / BMW / Sime Darby appear to be managing to assemble things vehicular in various business models. Much lower cost base than Stinkers, too.
BYD/ADL EV busses are considerably larger than cars, appear to be doing well.
Perhaps re-inventing the wheel, or car, from scratch is not viable or necessary?

i wont be going down the lecky road . until mobility cart time and the green/carbon credentials seem little better than existing new greener cars . i have a belief that hydrogen cars will come of age in the not so far future .

Well my 2p is they should stop trying to replicate a ICE drivetrain and play to their own advantages - in ICE extra fuel tank costs you little so it's fine to have cars for 3-400 miles+, in electrics this is the limiting factor in both weight and cost (and charging infrastructure needed).

So for example instead of Tesla lumbering the model 3 with a 300 mile range why not give it a 100 mile range, and then it would be less heavy, costly and more efficient and easier to charge without a super circuit or whatever it is called. Then just advertise it honestly:

Do you want a 25k car that does 0-60 in 5s and costs zero to run? Well if you can live with a 100 mile range here you are. And if you need to do 400 miles regularly, go buy yourself a diesel. There must be 25% of cars out there that never do more than 100 miles in a week let alone a day so play to the strengths and hoover up that market first and then worry about the rest when you've perfected that market.

i see vw are giving 8 yr batt warranty. the thing for me is the used market and batts 8 yr old and in 8 yr old cars and basically at EOL are going to have no used market value, increasing ownership cost , something i am sure NOT missed by makers and their leasing plans ..whats the percentage of CURRENT owners of cars 8 or more yrs old ? i must have 40 or more batt powered tools and to date batt life has been the governing factor in tool life /cost . the replacement of these often accounting for 80% of total cost. no accident that,i sure.at the moment batt cars are ok as grannies runner to sainsburiy,s and post office once a week until forced into mobility cart. what do you do with lecky car stuck on charge when/if one needs to go to hosp at 3 in the morning ? or some other urgent event ... batt/petrol/diesel i get ,one is still moving ......
