Evening everyone!

I recently picked up my 2003 SL500 up from the body shop which was in there for a month. Before it went it in, everything was fine (besides the rusting arches!).

I picked up the car this weekend gleaming and when I tried to put the roof down, nothing... well the roof button flashes red. When I move the button into the closed position, I can hear the system locking so I pretty certain all the mechanical bits are alright. I also have a look at the the easy bits such as the flaps and all seems to be intact.

so the million dollar question... why the hell wont my roof go down?! I don’t have any warning messages, the central locking and soft close boot all work as they should, the car has been stored inside so i don’t think it’s any damage caused by damp. Has anyone got any ideas? I’ve seen some threads suggesting that the consumer battery might be on its last legs? Is the roof not working a trait of the battery?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Ryan

I'd be inclined to take it back as if it was working beforehand but isn't now it's their problem.
You'll need star or similar to see why the roof says no.

Thanks AJ, I will start looking up videos on YouTube about resetting the windows and see what happens!
Push the window button to take window fully down, hold 5 seconds. Hold to come up (on the first bit of the movement), hold 5 seconds. Repeat other side.

Thank you! Will have a go at this when I next go to check up on the car (I’ve parked it at my brothers indoors).

You can easily tell if the windows need resetting. Just push the switch all the way down and release. If it goes down correctly do the same to close. If it autocloses it's probably ok. If it doesn't it needs a reset.

Maybe give the car a good run , to get the battery back to a healthy state after a month being stop started

Yeah. I don’t use any electrical consumables unless the engines running. I’m extra wary that it’s an old car with lots of electrical gadgets so I always have the engine running!

If the battery is low he'd get the consumers offline message.

Has anyone got any idea what the flashing red light when trying to drop the roof on the roof control means?

On mine, although not the same car, it means that the Flap thingy in the Boot isn't set to allow the Roof to Open.
On a 230 it tells you that in the instrument cluster as well. It also flashes if it thinks the boot is open, you're moving, etc... All with a message in the instrument cluster

if was REALLY clever it would simply tell you on the display WHY it wont go up/down and even if correct just say " resetting windows" if that was the issue .not simply drive you nuts for a few days in a lot of cases these cars know whats going on ! sitting on the roadside looking a p00345 for example is as much use as a chocolate fireguard.. now if one highlighted that and then an explanation appeared would that not be grand.. "visit workshop" is the same as puttin benz on direct debit, and i hate that ****** message. good luck to OP do tell when solved.

Update: Took the car out for its weekly drive (to keep everything charged and moving) and thought I’d have a go diagnosing the issue. Having watched lots of videos and read lots of articles, I thought of myself as an R230 roof expert. After an hour of unscrewing and taking trim off, I’ve realised that I know Jack s**t and should stick to being an accountant! I’m pretty certain the issue relates to the roof separator switch, but I think I might enquire with PCS, give them the situation and see if they can solve the riddle! I’m hoping it’s something real simple!
