Hi guys am new to this forum.
I have 2011 w204 c220cdi 7g auto. I’ve owned the car since February this year and have had bad luck ever since. Am having issues with my gearbox which is costing me a fortune. The problems are Gears struggling to change
No kick down
Goes into limp mode
Aggressive thump when changing gears
Is the fault intermittent: Yes
Intermittent fault description: All the time. Goes into limp mode when I quickly accelerate and then sticks at a gear and struggling to change gears. Heavy thump when changing gear first thing all the time. Done 3 diagnostic when the star computer. No faults have occurred on every diagnostic. Car has also been diagnosed from Mercedes specialist (dronsfield) (prestigeallparts) no codes found.

I have sent the control unit to get checked at ecutesting. Control
You come back with no faults.

please me help me

When was the ATF last changed?

As above, when was the ATF last changed and have you checked the fluid level?
Secondly, find another MB indy. With respect, Dronsfields/Prestige AllParts are a dodgy Mercedes breakers, not a respected indy.

Hi yes the atf was changed 2months ago. Still have the same problem. Because the star computer not picking up any fault codes all the garages I’ve been to say it may be the gearbox or the control unit. But I have had the control unit checked it’s all working fine.

Some of the faults you describe point to low fluid level.
Get the fluid level checked by someone who knows what they are doing (ie not Dronsfields)
The fluid has to be at a certain temperature (80c IIRC) and the car in neutral with the engine running to check the level.
Even a small discrepancy can cause problems.

Welcome!

Not easy when the car doesn’t throw up any codes presumably because the fault is intermittent. The symptoms you describe sound very much like the speed sensor failing in the electric plate which I think is a separate unit on the later 7g box, a common failure on the 210 and 211 cars but not so much on anything newer.

As said I would find a good independent to check the box has been filled properly etc and it may be worth putting in a new electric plate unless you wait for something to fail and throw a code

Generally when the gearbox goes into limp, it’s stuck in a gear. It maybe engine in limp and not generating enough power affecting the gearchange .

Would an engine causing a limp mode account for the gearbox 'thumping' on each gearchange?
I can understand no cruise or kickdown with an engine problem, but the thumping surely points to the box, not the engine.

Could be or he could be revving the engine too high, as there isn’t the correct torque for The gearbox to want to change?

We had similar on the wife’s card boost hose had split and after being replaced blew off, the car would rev freely but changes were erratic and holding lower gears, I thought it was a gearbox rebuild again (rebuilt about 18 months ago due to failed input shaft bearing) thankfully my Indy knows star and checked live values while on a drive to see what was happening, ruled out the gearbox and then proceeded to check the engine, took a couple of hours labour but that’s when they found the failed boost pipe.

Hi guys thank you for the suggestions, muchly appreciated. But 4months ago my timing chain had snapped so I had to have a engine put in by dronsfield. Which set me back 3800. I’ve had really bad luck with this car! The gearbox problem has been there ever since I purchased the car. Know one can advice me to fix it. No faults coming up on star.

Wow, that is serious stuff.

What mileage is on the car?
Does it have a good service history?

SPR auto in Stockport are a reputable Mercedes Indy - not too far away from you.

Took my car there when my 7g box was playing up. Ended up just needing a fluid change. Fair pricing too.

Cheers bud I’ve had no luck to finding the problem on my car. I’ll give them a call and take see what they say.
