Youths Car is approaching its recommended cambelt change time.

Its a VW 2.0 Tdi.

VW want £494 including water pump change.

A Gates full kit with everything including pump can be had for £124.

How much VW want for their parts I don't know.

My daughter had her cambelt & water pump changed two weeks ago at a local garage, (not VW dealer), approx £200 all in.

That seems remarkably cheap, although the job does vary a bit depending on model and engine as access on some of them is tricky and needs things like engine mounts undoing.

VW dealers were offering cambelt only for £299 plus £50 for water pump when I had it done on daughter's 1.4 petrol Golf and the indie we use said that's less than he'd want to charge - that's using genuine "VW" parts.

Yes, that is about right. I was trying to remember how much it was on my Eos and I seem to remember had it started with a 2. I had that done at a local Bosch German Car Indy. :)

They will charge 3 hours labour so with the kit the price is about right, do you have a good indy near you?, will be at least £150 cheaper

Difficult to know if you are comparing apples with apples. In the old days you could just mark the pulleys up with tippex and swap the new belt on. Modern tech and precision means that tooth for tooth isn't close enough anymore. The cam sprockets are vernier adjust, the crank sprockets are keyless in many cases, and on modern diesels the high pressure pump needs timing too. Without the correct tools for the job they cannot be replaced with enough precision to ensure the best fuel economy is maintained and other features like DPF's are going to work within the parameters they need to see. Worth asking the question "do you have the correct timing tools for this job?" when booking it in.

Wouldn't post that on a public forum :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Yeah, because the tax inspectors are sifting through pages and pages of forums in order to get leads on who maybe doing a bit of work for friends...
