My beloved 1990 500 SEC has water in the rear driver side footwell and I've spent a lot of money trying to fix it. The sunroof has been replaced and the four water spouts are clear. There was a hole in behind the battery but that has been repaired. I can't see any windows leaking and the boot seems OK. The panel that usually rots is in good shape.

Three different garages have had a go at this and failed. The car is rarely used and I don't think it's A/C or other hoses leaking.

I am absolutely baffled and would be very grateful for any wisdom

What about under the rear windscreen rubber seal? Has it rusted under the seal letting water in?

That looks OK but I've just noticed the passenger side well in the boot is wet so it's getting in there somehow. How that could get into the driver side footwell I can't think

Water can track until it finds the lowest place, I'd be taking the rear seat out and look for evidence where if it's coming down from the back

Have you lifted the rubber up all the way around the rear screen?

Here's a 500SEC from benzworld, note how much of the metal has rusted away from where the rear screen fitted...

Compare it to the repaired panel

Thanks for that. It looks like I've got another pile of expense ahead

500 SEC is a beautiful car and my first experience of Mercedes, from sitting in the drivers seat and trying to start the car not realising it was already running I decided that MB is where I wanted to be sat. Worth repairing as not that many left now unfortunately :(
