It will have to work. There is no way consumers will accept a 5G service if they have no data outside main centres.5g is the ideal technology for the highly detailed data an autonomous car would require and is here already in uk now.
Backwards compatability would'nt really work for 5g as it is very different system to 4g using a different type of transmitter.
The 5G network also shares infrastructure with 4G. This is one of the reasons we will end up using Huawei network devices for 5G as to not do so would mean ripping out a lot of the 4G network and the cost involved in doing so is too great.
