Hi, so i got a 190e from -84 with a annoying issue. The car starts up fine and runs fine but after it gets warm ( usually 5-10 minutes) it starts stalling and will not respond at all. If you give it too much gas it just dies and it will have a hard time starting again, you can manage to move if you slip on the clutch with little gas but even then when i put in the third gear its too much and it dies. I basically can't drive it all. Sometimes it backfires if you force it gas. I can hear the fuel pump go off when i turn the ignition. I really wouldn't like to spend too much money on it buying parts until i find whats wrong so i was hoping you guys could have an idea. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it's firing up ok on the cold start enrichment then once that switches out it's going lean. Unfortunately I don't know enough about that type of injection to suggest where to look.

Just had a thought....
Our neighbour had a friend visiting with a BMW with the same injection system. It had the same problem. We cured it by removing the airflow meter, giving it a good clean and reassembling. It seems the flap that moves when the throttle is opened and for some reason it had stuck.

Thanks, i shall look into that.

Worth checking out the distributor cap for any condensation as well..

The cap itself looks brand new, seems dry on the inside. Perhaps the rotor should be changed also...

Hi Fistekake,

this site has plenty of good information on the 190e which may be of use

https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/MBZ_Tech_Index-190E.htm

Also the OVP (voltage protection) relay's cause a lot of problems on this era of Mercedes. It is located behind your battery in the engine bay. They can be either replaced or re-soldered quite easily. If an OVP relay is faulty you often get the ABS light coming on.

Thanks for the link! I was under the impression that a faulty relay relates to cold start problems mostly but i might be wrong. No ABS on the car. Update: Oddly the OVP relay was on the right side, besides the fuses. The relays 10a fuse was ok. Maybe a dumb questions but does all 190's have that same relay? If thats the case i could borrow my buddy's relay but it's a 2.6 so i suppose it have to be different?

It's not the engine, but the year that makes them different, I think as you have an extremely early version you will ha e the older type so the 2.6 probably won't fit

Well you learn something new every day. On my 1991 190d 2.5 the ovp is behind the battery. Maybe because the diesels have no ecu they use this area unlike petrol models. There used to be some real w201 expertise on the mercedes-190.co.uk forum.

I see, that tiny piece is almost 50 euros but i guess its worth changing.

I've read a bunch of threads on different forums and found a few with the same symptoms and i read that a bad ignition coil can give such problems. What do you think about that?

Possible I guess if it's failing when it gets warm.

Yeah well the thing is if you stop and wait like a minute the car runs fine again for max 5 min then stalls again, like if something were too hot.

If it is the coke can ignition coil, checking the resistance when warm (if it gets warm in 5 minutes mind) can confirm this.

Thanks for the tip. Yep it is the can looking ignition coil. However i already ordered a new coil that wasn't too expensive, along with a temp sensor and some other stuff... I thought well if it's the problem or not it wouldn't hurt with a new one. Will take about 2 weeks, in the meantime i'm open for more suggestions and tips.

I'm currently facing the same issue with my 1990 190E with 3.0 engine from w124 (103 983)
Have you figured out what was wrong ?
Mine seems to run fine when cold can drive it even for few minutes before getting warm
Then starts to run very very rich like black smoke out of the exhaust.
