I've not had a problem with power tool batteries since I starting keeping them in the house. Left out in the garage all winter just killed them.

Some years ago I had to bin 3 perfectly good cordless drills - 2 x 18v and 1 x 14.4v - as replacement batteries were no longer available, sending the packs off for re-celling was £50 per pack, I had IIRC 8 battery packs! Bought a Metabo 18v combi, metal gearbox and batteries will still be available when I'm fitted for my pine overcoat.

Some battery packs can be taken apart. Unsolder the batteries and replace them with new ones.
Remember how they fit in, get the polarities the right way and put it back together. Cheaper than buying replacements

I did look at that option, OK for the main bottom part of the packs but far more difficult for the top couple of batteries going up the handle. Decided it was beyond my limited capabilities! I even bought a load of sub-C tagged batteries and tried!

I threw away a JCB cordless drill because the batteries weren't available. It was immaculate, what a waste. Haven't bothered replacing it as I've got plenty of extension leads for my corded drills. I can get some mains drilling time cordlessly with my 1500VA UPS if i really needed to go off mains..

good tip. my workshop is under house so in winter temps stay near constant boiler there adds heat . what i noticed is that they seem to die (power tool batts ) if i run them to a standstill then try to charge ..

2xFor Ryobi ONE+ 6.0AH RB18L50 Li-Ion Tool Battery 18V P104 P108 RB18L40 RB18L13 | eBay

I've found these aren't as good as Ryobi original for longevity but they do ok for a fraction of the cost.
I've a fair bit of kit due to the common battery set up and so keeping spares isn't so bad.
The 18v grinder seems to kill 'em off a lot faster than the lower load stuff, and as you say that may because I was doing continual work and ran them till flat before swapping.
They didn't all suffer though.

You might try a pulse repair charger for the car batteries, it worked for me. Although I've not had them on the boat yet to test their load capability. I can't get to it.

I bought a 2 Ahr Nicad in June 16. That failed about 8 months ago. It'll still run the torch but for how long??

2x 4 Ahr bought Jul 17,
2 more Aug 18,
and 2 more Mar 19,
so 6 of these (assumed Chinese) 4 Ahr packs.

I've 2 sat next to me waiting for me to open them up as I'm assuming they're using the 18650 cells and testing to see if a cell or more, or the charging cct has failed shouldn't be overly difficult.
I couldn't tell you when I bought these.

I also picked up on of these,
Rapid Battery Charger For RYOBI 12V-18V Ni-CD Ni-MH Li-ion Power Dual USB Tool | eBay

It's much faster to charge than my little Ryobi original, but the original does get the packs to a higher state of charge, marginally.

A see the batteries are up by several quids, while the charge just a couple of quids. I'm thinking this increasing price of Chines kit will be an ongoing trend, especially if our £ is going to buy less $. But who knows where the US is going to end up in all of this, begging the Chinese for medical supplies possibly?

My first Ryobi tool came with a near identical charger to that but the second charger we got is smaller and much slower. All genuine Ryobi kit.

I've bought a cheapo drill to be kept on the boat, there is always something to do on it and having a cordless on board has got me out of trouble more than once.
I have the smaller charger so may leave it on board to charge via a wind turbine / inverter when we're absent.
A more compact battery would be good. The original 1.3 Ahr is still good, but a larger capacity can't go amiss, so more searching found these, and cheaper than the previous link. The 3 Ahr looks good.

Heat is worse for batteries than the cold. A car battery typically lasts 4-5 years here in Spain - it isn't the mildish winter nor the odd -5 degrees when you go skiing where they all go - it's the hot summer, apparently when temps get over 30 degrees c it's as stressful as -20 degrees c on the battery and dramatically shortens its life

one problem i have found with the larger capacity ryobi batteries(yes i use it as well) is that if you dont have huge hands it is nigh on impossible to undo the latches on either side simultaneusly to remove the battery. i have to hold the drill etc between my knees and use both hands to remove the battery (problems problems eh)!!

you mean to use the battery as one?
I suppose using Larisa's edge trimmer as a handle it could work.

She never did thank me for that birthday pressie, so ungrateful.

For long term storage it seems 70% charged is best for lithium.. Never run them down so that the tool cuts out.. that kills them rather quickly..
I dont know about others but makita use one battery cell to power the onboard chip... Flatten the battery too much or store and that cells voltage drops to the point where the battery decides its faulty and thats it !
Connecting a good battery to a non charging one for a few mins can boost the voltage enough for the chargr to be happy and recharge it again.

I bought a Bosch 18v Drill with 2 batteries from one of the big sheds - B&Q perhaps - about 2 years ago. It lives along with the spare battery and charger in a cupboard that’s actually under the stairs and in the centre of the house - nice warm temperature. I swap the battery over whenever I use it and for the jobs I’ve had to do its the best thing since the proverbial sliced bread. I paid around 65 squid down from 89 I was hesitant because I’ve read that they downgrade them for the DIY stores but it’s been worth every penny!
