Is that on the strip that runs either side of the roof where the roof rack would fit ?. I think that is common, I have a very small amount there although it hasn't actually broken through the paint, it just looks lie small bubbles. Been there for some time now :(
Yep, hopefully you see in this photo. Might be worth you taking yours to a MB dealer, as they have agreed to replace the whole panel for free. This was because the issue is from beneath and not due to external damage/lack of care.

W124 1987 200
W124 1987. Spot of rust about 10c piece size on driver side rear door where quarter glass joins rear of window frame.

W140 1992 No rust
W208 1999 CLK 430 (missus) no rust
W203 2006 no rust

I can't believe it, my 1987 W124 has the same rust spot in the same place! (Or I can't believe that I have read through almost 40 pages of the rust thread)

i'm curious with all the talk of rust on mercs, what year if any is safe from rust, and if that year is let's say 2004, is that because the rust hasn't had a chance to appear yet ?

so, here's a wee poll, if you own a merc, look at the years above, if your merc has ANY rust then vote for that year.

Sadly I can only have 10 options so this was all I could fit in.

once you have voted, please reply below with the year/model of your car (preferably in W203/W202/W210 etc format)

cheers

I have looked at 10 yr olds with rust
starting to show under bonnet , edge of guards etc. Yet I have saw 15 yr olds same model and could not find a spot of rust.

My post relates to the following -:2006 SL, rust trying to get a hold on the rear arches only. Required flatting , treating, respraying (with an aerosol can) luckily the rust hadnt made it around onto the "face" of the wing. 2006 CLS, tiniest amount on the rear arches- to be treated and BL mini trims fitted loaded with Noxudol (i find it better than Waxoyl) as per the SL. We also have a 2007 Sprinter, absolute rot box, rust everywhere. I wonder if the rust is due to WHERE the cars are built, not when ?

A number of reasons for rust all of them disgraceful, it simply should not be happening.

Rust seems to be like some diseases in the human population, entirely random and unpredictable, it's a lottery.

I have a 2004 R230 which is in excellent condition except for a rust bubble in the middle of the driver's door ! ( plus the usual issues with the rear wheel arches).

Had a W210 E320 (2001) after 12 years and 118,miles it was scrapped because of rust eating away at the front suspension spring housings. Previously various body panels and wheel arches repaired by MERC Blackpool with my own contribution towards bonnet chips, returned with someone else’s worn tyres.
Since told that was year started to use water based paint. Complete piece of rusty junk.

Yes, also the period they used cheap steel, meaning no matter what paint system or galvanisation they used, it was going to rust sooner or later!

Likewise with 2008 & 2009 W164 ML’s.
Hi my 270 clk 2005 is just showing signs too.Cleaning it today cleaned off a huge amount of damp mud on inner wheel arch which is difficult to remove. It bought back a memory of a story my dad told me.
In late 50s and up to early 60s he worked as a civilian for USAF at Ruislip in then Middlesex. He had a senior position and purchased vehicles in uk for them, the particular vehicle was the Vauxhall Cresta PA very yank looking car . He was friendly with the local Vauxhall Dealer ( he was buying about 10 vehicles) and their MD was very keen to show him one of the model up on ramp to view suspension etc of this very modern car .My dad commented on the unplugged holes in sills by wheel arches and was told "this is planned obsolescence they ain't built to last !! " Its funny you didn't see many 10 year old ones ! Could this have been Chrysler influence for same reason or a bad design ?? It made me think though.

I remember as a teenager a mate of mine having a PA Cresta. We thought he was the mutts nuts in that car.

Two or three years ago a mate of mine bought a lovely clean one in the two tone blue and he is chuffed as nuts with it. When he first got it he insisted I had a drive in it. I had been thinking of buying a classic my self until I drove his Cresta, What an awful thing it was to drive, put me right off getting a classic myself. 'They don't make 'em like they used too' thank god they don't !!
