Hi Guys
As some of you know, I've recently purchased my first Mercedes a few months back and so far I love the ****** thing......I must stress that I'm not a mechanic by no stretch of the imagination, but in some cases i would have a general idea(hope that makes sense).
I believe these types of forums(Of any manufacture) carry a wealth of knowledge and therefore priceless to a guy like me. That being said, I'm looking to you guys for some advice on my next task
As soon as I purchased, I did the norm and serviced it changing all the filters etc. and the cars running great. However, I've done a little research regarding the dreaded transmission service and i believe it should be done every 40000 or 3yrs, I'm hoping i understood this correctly ??? I bought my car with 87000 with full history but nowhere on the history does it mention the transmission service ???
So needless to say I'm a little worried now (infact panicking) !!!!!!!!
I've managed to source the service kit (should arrive on Thur/Fri) and gonna try and attempt this at the weekend.....

Any comforting words of advice on what to expect ???

Thx in advance guys !!!

Hi Guys
Just a quick update...... Got the service kit today and needless to say got stuck in...lol
The journey to collect the kit and back was able to get tyranny to operating temp, as suggested by V6Matty. To be honest I throughly enjoyed it......was annoyed bout an hour ago that I didn't do a rough step by step on my experience, but maybe you guys already know......

However I did come across as a small issue....hoping for some advice on this from you guys....

Once service completed, I was at the stage of going thru the gears etc and then waiting for the recommended 45 C topping up as required....when I noticed a small leak from the pump which i had previously removed to access the torque converter.........

So its either the seals or maybe it just hasn't seat properly........

My question is...once the tyranny cools down(as in overnight) will i be able to remove the pump again, without loosing any oil or do I have to go thru the whole process again ????

P.S. was really enjoying it too until that feckn point !!!!

Thx guys

You won't lose all the oil, but you will lose some. You should replace the rubber bungs that join the pump to the gearbox, whenever you have it off.

Thought I may lose something....was really looking a second opinion .....actually hoping that once the oil cooled down, I'd have a fighting chance of getting away with it.....Yeah, ill have to order more oil now then ??? Only hay bout a ltr or so left....
Thx mate for the advice !!!

I doubt you will lose more than a liter so you should be OK!

I'll have to wait on the o rings anyway...so I'll probably order another ltr, just incase...id rather be looking at it than looking for it... but appreciate the reply !!!

Was looking forward to taking it a good run too, see if there is any noticeable difference ????

Hi,

Well done on getting the ATF change done.

On the pump there are 2 small pipes that go from the pump to the gearbox.
These are a push fit to the pump and can come out when the pump is removed.
They can fall into pan you used to catch the old ATF -- don't ask me how I know !!??

Make sure that both little pipes are in the pump when you refit it and not sitting in the bottom of the old ATF. The are only about an inch long so are very easy to miss or leave in the bottom of the old fluid.
Here is a picture of the underside of the pump with the little pipes. Someone has stuffed bits of a paper towel or the like into the pipes in the picture so you will see what I am talking about.

There will be a leak if either are missing.

I doubt if more than one litre will come out if you remove the pump and refit.

Jez Steve, that's helped alot mate. The pic is great.....as you know its not rocket science to remove and refit, actually thought i was very careful too (smart arse, that'll feckn teach me) but as you say, they're so easy to miss.....To see that small weep while the engine was running, was feckn raging !!!
I've ordered the o rings as suggested by Alex...so no matter what, ill replace them anyway and also another ltr of oil, just incase.
But ill follow up once I get sorted !!!!!

Big thx to everyone who replied, thx again !!
