Many years ago I was driving with a colleague when I cursed a bad driver with a private plate. I said anyone with a personalised number was a complete knob. A while later I found out she had a private plate, one of those that nearly spells her name if you stand at an acute angle and squint a bit. But she’s a lovely lady, a good pal, and not a knob. I still work with her now and I’ve felt bad about what I said ever since.

I was guilty in those days of holding very strong opinions on all subjects, regardless of evidence or knowledge (these days I’m quite happy to admit to having no view whatsoever on most topics). But I still have no desire to personalise my car with a private plate. I know lots of Mercedes drivers have them, so I was wondering, what’s the appeal?

I changed my name by deed poll to match my number plate - much cheaper that way....
Haha, that’s such a good idea, it could catch on.

I could have gotten DA1 1 BEV for about a grand. Put a deposit on a holiday instead :p:p:p. I would have one, but only if money was no object.

Just a bit of fun that's all. I've bought a few, but all much less than £1k. Gets a bit serious when some go for several hundred £k though. Very nearly bid on CL65AMG but it got up to over £3k and I couldn't put it on the car anyway. Now for sale at £6k.

I think they are something you either like or you don’t without much in between .
There are different types as well , you have the more “ serious “ individuals who have their initials on the plate , some people have 3 initials as well  !
You have those who have car related personal plates like that have car engine size or model on them .
Then you have the nickname plates which show you have a sense of humour  , I paid £400 for W13HTY , makes me chuckle every time I see it :D .

Maybe, but isn’t owning a Mercedes vanity too? Or polishing your car every weekend? We’ve all got a bit of vanity, but a private plate definitely seems to be a specific acquired taste.

My 3 daughters got me mine for me 55 birthday, SL 07 KEV,which is perfect for my 07 sl and me name Kevin,Think it cost just under £400 at the time,I was never that bothered about personal plates I thought they were a bit flash, but there’s more to worry about than a number plate in life

I was lucky enough to be gifted my private plate with 5 relevant initials and a significant number, to me at least, on it.

My Christian and middle names for the first two letters, ‘59 was the year I was born and the last three letters are the first three in my surname. My boys bought it for my 60th birthday. I love it. It is still in keeping with the age of the car and imho doesn’t look to “flash” it’s subtle. :D

What else should we worry about? We all worry about trivia. Most don't sweat the big stuff. Some even worry about the spacing between the letters & numbers.
