Clc 200 Kom. oil dipstick reading

Hi folks, new here. Just changed oil and filter on our clc 200 1.8, 2010 model with a 5.5 litre capacity. I drained oil and left for three hours to dribble out etc., and carefully put exactly 5.5 litres back in. However on checking dipstick after a run, on a flat surface and left to settle down into the sump for an hour, I still get a dipstick with oil reading only half way up the min and max. Its not the first time I've noticed this. Anyone else come across this? Is it because MB assume there may be 200/300 mls of old oil left in the sump if it is only drained a short while as in a garage scenario? Thanks in advance. Ps. All others cars I have changed oil in the past have always shown a full dipstick on filling with the correct given capacities. Thanks. Ant

Is that 5.5 litres including filter? I'd expect 6.5 to 7 litres.

Our V6 E class and 5 Litre V8s all take 7 - 8 litres. MB tend to use large sumps to aid oil cooling and oil life. I would have expected yours to be 6.5 litres or so including filter. The sump capacity may be quoted as 5.5 litres but won't include filter capacity.

Check the oil level hot , 10 mins after stopping , that may be near on max then .

Hi and thanks to all who have replied to this thread. Think I will add 200ml or so and see where that figures on the dipstick. Manual says 5.5 with filter though???? Can't believe MB are so vague if indeed it needs 5.7/8 or so to meet the dipstick max unless their intention is to have 5.5 litres showing at the mid way position on the dipstick?

Don’t add any until you check it hot , fluid expands

Yes, that's a good point, thanks. Also, I think from other cars I've had there is bound to be a built in tolerance to take say 5% or so extra without hurting because if you were at a petrol station and checked the oil level, there is bound to be at least half a litre slowly drawing down that won't show on the dipstick. Like most people (I’m sure ) I drain the hot oil from the car or suction pump it , measure the hot oil take 1/2L off and add cold new oil , run it all up to temperature and then add small amounts until I get to my chosen dipstick level .
I change the oil (despite the jokes ) every 5000 miles

Hello again Wighty. In your experience might it be OK to drain just some of the total auto fluid capacity from the gearbox pan and replace the exact amount that drains out? Car has only done 44k and is a 2010 model but I am beginning to feel slight 'variations' in the gear changes that I haven't felt before. Not jumpy but sometime the changes seem slightly odd and not quite right? Thought replacing a pans worth of fluid might help in case I am wasting £3/400 on a full change that makes no difference. Car has only been driven statesman like and unstressed. Thanks in advance.
