I use Fuchs for both and change them earlier than recommended (every 5k miles for the engine and every 45k miles for the 7g+ gearbox).

Thanks. Which specific oils do you use for both engine and transmission please?

I see for my CLK 350 MB lists engine oil 229.5 or 229.3. Can anybody throw light on the difference? I see most posts mention only 229.5.

229.5 is engine oil for cars with no DPF, as it has a higher ash content.
It isn't as readily available as 229.5'1' anyway and the 229.51 is good for both with and without DPF.

229.5 will harm a DPF.

Is 229.3 still available? I don't see the point in considering it even if it is.

The last time I bought some it was 20 litres of Moteronol (Petronas) 229.51 from MB Newcastle.
Delivered it was cheaper than the likes of Halfords, and a very handy 20 litre container with a vent to prevent gurgling when pouring.
it'll also be handy for the waste oil down the tip later.

He has a petrol CLK , so 229.5 is the right oil (but yes he can use 229.51 as well )

I can find 229.5 but at a price. I can find 229.3 at a low price but not one that's on MB's approved list. As y'all say 229.51 Genuine MB is available at a good price for 20 lt; will it be as good as 229.5 for my 2005 V6 petrol CLK? And what's DPF, Darned Pretty Fast?

What engine does the op have? I maybe wrongly assumed he has a CDI

No quite,
dumb problematic filter.

It's designed to slow you down by sapping power and use more fuel. But it does save the planet some by causing many cars o be prematurely scrapped.

Thank you gents.
So, to be clear, 229.51 will be just as good for my 3.5 l V6 petrol as 229.5, yes?
No downside?

Only that normally the 229.5 is 5w/40 , the 229.51 is 5w/30 , if that’s not an issue then go for it .
Mannol do some cheap oil in 20L form that meets either spec , on eBay
