OK,

I have found some older (2010) E Classes with 7 seats. None of the facelift (with the C Class interior i.e. from late 2016) though.

Therefore, odd question but is is possible to get a 5 seater E-Class then install the extra two rear seats in the boot?

Thanks

Jas

Yes it is. We were going to do this with our S211, but looking at sourcing the parts, the loss of space in the boot and the buggeration factor involved, I traded the car in against a 7 seater R class instead ;)

There used to be a company called 7 seater conversion who converted my S124 but I think they have stopped trading so the only practical solution is to find a S212 scrapper and buy the parts off that might take a while unless you drop lucky

Yes I was looking at those but frankly I am hoping to retain the benefit of a nice 2017 E220/E250 estate as the 7 seat option will only be needed infrequently.

And as above, obtaining the parts is likely to be a challenge of itself, my local Merc dealership thought the 7 seat option was only available from 2014-2016...........

the trouble is, the folding rear seats kickspace takes up the extremely handy space under the rear luggage bay lift up floor panel, and with them folded one loses several inches of height.

it’s not a very good compromise. However, parts from 2014-16 should fit your car.

Yes I was looking at those but ............

Go for it. I had one for a number of years & though the 3rd row seats were rarely used they were very handy when needed .... and you can fit an adult in them too, not just children like rear facing seats in the estate.

I once watched a telly programme years ago about safety ratings etc of various cars/types of cars and they had crash test dummy kids in the rear facing seats of a huge American 'station wagon' They rear ended the station wagon at moderate speed, the dummies, just wearing lap belts were thrown forwards ie towards the back of the car. The car that hit them was now gaining on the back of the station wagon again having shoved the car forwards in the initial impact ..... the dummies now got squashed on the 2nd impact.
It put me off the idea of carrying kids in the back of an estate.

Having a ride in the rear facing seats of Zundap Janus was a little unnerving!:p

It’s true that we bought our R Class mainly as a result of Emilysdad’s good recommendations. Properly practical car it is too.

I have a feeling that the seats in the boot aren't possible in the W213 as there is no spare wheel well in the boot, as far as I know.

I am struggling with the concept of having an R Class.... If push comes to shove we may end up with a Kia Sorento... Not ideal, but there we go. I will still have the C Class and a two seater sports car so not the end of the world, I was just hoping a nice 2017/18 E class would be sit nicely with the C....

Saying that the wife seems to quite like the look of them, shame they are not newer as well though.

I struggled until I gave an LWB 320 a go. Ride comfort (and seat comfort!) of an S Class, 0-60 of about 9 seconds (not fast, but typical family car level), 30mpg average, 7 seats and decent boot or 5 seats and the biggest boot I’ve seen that wasn’t a Transit van.

Our R Class is the most practical and easiest to drive/ use family car we have ever had.

At the risk of upsetting the R-Class owners here... (sorry!)
I drove an elderly R320cdi once - a courtesy car from Stevensons in Maidstone, but it was actually Steve's own car that he used to tow his son's racing car on a trailer. How can I put this? After our E-Class estate, it was ponderous. You needed to brake in plenty of time as it gave the feeling of great weight. Maybe it was a well-used example?

The LWB R Class is around 350kg heavier than a 211 estate. It’s significantly more ponderous. Not so much on the braking, but definitely on the acceleration and handling.
But then it isn’t an E Class. It’s a ML with different body shaping.

Something like that. Put it this way, we always surprise every other car around us at the lights or when turning onto local the dual carriageway. Especially the “hot hatch” boy racers.
