Engine Oil Sludge on a brand new 2018 c220d! HELP

Hi there,

Bought a brand new c220d off the showroom floor in 2018 and its been 3 years and i have done about 45k miles. Had my first full service at 24k miles in august 2019 and havent had anything checked since because have not had any warning lights.

Now late 2020 i was driving 7k overdue service and on xmas day my car broke down. A week before i had got into a slight crash but the car was only damaged aesthetically (grill and front bumper).

On xmas day as i was driving back home my car suddenly stopped working. I have had an amber warning sign to check oil levels a week back and was meant to get it serviced and checked just after xmas. Now when the car broke down i managed to get it started, drove to the side road and parked up. The engine was making a horrible loud sound as if it was banging on something.

Had the car recovered to a Merc garage and they said there was an oil sludge build up on the engine and basically its toasted. I have to get a new engine replacement which may end up costing me around 13k!

This is ridicolous as i cannot afford to pay such amounts! I am not sure what to do as I have tried to exercise every possible option (Private work = expensive). I may get the car written off as i deem the cost of repair to be more than the current value of my car. (I have 1 year left out of my 4 year lease agreement).

I simply cannot afford to pay a huge amount for the engine repair and i need some guidance/advice on what to do. I refuse to believe that my car who is less than 4 years old having engine problems!

Please any advice will do!

Without being too much help to the direct issue at hand -

Buying a brand new car and having the first service at 24k (seems late) then waiting for car to die and scheduling the next service 7k overdue seems pretty shoddy maintenance if I may.

Furthermore as this is lease car, are you not obliged to have the car serviced as manufacturer says as the car is owned by the lease company, as opposed to drive it into the ground.

Any good indy would be able to take the head off and clean up. but it depends on the extent of the sludging / final cost and damage.

Erm, how do you intend on getting car written off.

I’m not surprised the engine has failed if you didn’t have the oil changed until 24,000 miles. To go 7000 miles overdue for service is also neglectful, I’m sorry to say. Good luck with everything.

Agree with the above, crazy to ignore service schedule, especially on a new car , cant really sympathise, its your own fault

When I obtain a car new to me I service it and again in a week or two , then every 6 months .

Oil and oil filters cheap , engines expensive...

I think its ridiculous that you get a brand new car, don't look to maintain it and then bemoan the response of the garage.

As a garage you are the dream customer!

Would that be a new engine or a new car sir?

Surely if the OP "gets the car written off" somehow he will be responsible for all outstanding lease payments plus the value of the car? Probably somewhat more than the cost of repairs. Never leased so I'm not sure about this stuff.

The wifes bmw is every 2 years or 20k , i service the oil inbetween as 20k is asking for trouble.

im not asking for sympathy, yes i know its my fault.

Im just asking for what the next step is. Do i get a new engine or find a indy garage that could clean up my engine. do i buy a 2nd hand engine and if i do so by giving it back to mercedes (as i leased with them) will that be a problem? or do i fork out a new engine

If you've leased it and not serviced it as per the agreement you're already in a world of financial pain...

It all depends on how much you will have to pay the Lease company if you stop the contract now.

im leasing with mercedes itself. so im assuming the payment will be a big sum. even though i only have a year left on my lease agreement.

Or if they will even accept the car back with a scrap engine, either way you look at it I think you are going to be paying out a lot to get out of this,
Personally I suspect they will charge you for the full cars value if you tried to finish it now,

so my best bet is just to try get my engine fixed my a good indy garage. not really much i can do atm. my own mistake but i have to get out of it.

If your car was recovered to a Mercedes dealership and your lease is with Mercedes I think you're going to struggle here, sorry- they will know the synopsis. Not what you want to hear I'm sure

only reason why it was recovered to a Mercedes dealership was that the car is still under warranty. but due to the car not being serviced or maintained properly the warranty does not cover that unfortunately.

we live and learn. going to be an expensive cost!
