Number Plate Spacing

Considering buying a private number plate for the first time. I’ve seen a D4 NXO which the current owner has always had printed as D4N XO. What are the chances of getting pulled over? And what actually happens if you do? I’ve seen so many people with plates that have been moved like that.

The chances of getting pulled over vary depending on where you are and how much you drive your car, but they are very real.
What will happen first is that you will be told to get it fixed, and you may have to visit an MOT station to confirm that it has been fixed. Of course you may also be issued with a fixed penalty at the same time.
The consequences of doing nothing and getting caught again can result in the plate being removed from your vehicle.
Honestly....it is not worth the risk.
Just get a plate that means something to you without having to mess about with the spacing.

I know of 2 people that have been pulled for incorrectly spaced number plates. One was given a verbal because he was gracious in defeat & he had the old, correctly spaced number plates still in the boot. The other had J33P ** on his Jeep & gave the copper a mouthful when he was stopped .... he was fined!

It's just a countdown, the way that number plate is presented is illegal.......full stop

Are you planning on buying an Audi?
If not don't illegally space your numb erp late
If you are make sure you get a 4D one with a 50% tint

Do some other online research as I thought the spacing requirements were relaxed some years back.
As long as the plate can be read ok w/o the likes of a strategically placed black screw cap or 2 I thought it was ok.

You might visit an MOT station and ask their opinion on what passes.

The correct spacing will be designated by an "abiding" place that makes the plates.
Driving with incorrectly spaced plates, means your just waiting to be pulled, is it worth the hassle.

We all see these number plates on the road and be honest what do we all think, errr thats illegal

The size, spacing and font of number plate characters is set down in law and has not been changed.

I knew this was a proposal towards the end of last year, so has it actually been passed and made law?
It will also cover plates that are otherwise perfectly legal but are obscured and cannot be read.

It means you have to have an additional "GB" sticker on the back of the vehicle as well for travel on the continent

If lawmakers were involvded we'd probably find that all our existing vehicles are now illegal and must be replaced with whatever ecomentalist whim they're promoted to recommend...

All my vehicles have Euro style GB plates.
My choices are therefore fit a nasty GB sticker to each car we use (and take it off on return so it doesn't mark paintwork) or replace number plates with GB ones with a UK flag.
Either way it's another cost to me.
That's on top of the pet passport scheme where we now need to get an Animal Health Certificate for each dog (@93.50 per dog and we have three) before we take them to France. That's each and every time.
We may have found a way round that one after the first £280.50 though....but at a one time cost of £60 per dog on top of the £280.50.
