Hi folks,

I am left feeling pretty underwhelmed I am having a problem with my exhaust fault reading on my dash the van has gone in to limp home mode and is very slow. So i removed both cat and dpf today from my van and had a look and despite the outer of these exhaust's seeming old the filters inside where very clean looking inside. Which leaves me to think that maybe the sensors are at fault. the two air sensor things that are connected to pipes both nuts fell apart when I tried to remove them. My question is is this a common fault i did have a look around and notice a lot of people have had right knight mares trying to fix these problems can any one suggest what might be causing this fault to read on my display.

thanks.

Hi bobski, what van do you have? exhaust filter drive at high speed is a normal message to get when the van has missed its DPF cycle, mostly because of shorts runs in my case. You need to drive at 2000RPM or above to initiate a burn, engine needs to be at normal temp and at least 1/4 full of diesel. If that doesn't work you need to get the codes read. If your sensor is faulty it should illuminate the check engine light like it did on mine. My guess is you the DPF cant be fitted again in its current state? Did the nuts on the metal back pressure pipes disintegrate or on the electrical temp sensors? If its a Vito you didn't have to remove the metal pipes just the rubber flexi pipes attached to them if I remember correctly

HI Kev,

I have a Vito 113 cdi. 639 603, Yeah they disintegrated. I kind off realized that i had to take them from the rubber tubes later on. I am not sure I reckon if i work then threads and can source the nuts. the temp sensor nut is also severely stuck on. I have tried to find the part online the dpf part but cant seem to find the correct one. I was just wanting to know what else could be going wrong. I am not sure if maybe my turbo is at fault someone suggested my inlet manifold cracked. but the van isn't noisy but I will do a nosey around it tomorrow.

I have travelled so many miles the regen may have always been taking place hence the dpf being quite clean to look at and during wash out with only running water, a small amount came out. I then soaked it in just washing soap for 40 mins then flushed it out. I am just really worried as to what the real problem is..

thanks.

The only way to really know why the van wont do a regen is get a diagnostic done first. Have you an icarsoft reader? If not I recommend owning one if you are planning on keeping the Vito Bobski. I have been through the grinder with mine on many an occasion including DPF issues and found the icarsoft diagnostic tool the best priced tool for the job. I leave mine plugged in mostly so I can see the regen happening in real time, to avoid any issues ahead of time. You possibly have caught the van early into the problem as it seems this is the first time you have seen this message on the LCD dash display. The main things to give trouble are the downstream and upstream temp sensors and the pressure sensor. Doing a quick google search for "Vito DPF pressure pipes" returns this search among plenty of others including Flea-bay. You didn't mention what year your van was? Possibly these pipes could be a match? As regards the Temp sensor in the DPF, best just to ring your local auto parts store with your registration or VIN no and they should be able to supply the correct part if you find its at fault. From memory mine was somewhere around the £60-£70 mark

So I checked the gas temp sensor today in the multimeter and when I applied heat to the element it didn't move the LCD. So my my guess is this is probably at fault. So my next question. I am finding it really hard to get the correct part. Going by pic the ones that look correct say they don't suit my vehicle and they ones there suggesting look like they don't. So tell me is this not just a part and any would do?. I seen a brand for s car can't remember if the to of my head what kind but it looked really the same and at only £35

Mines 2011 so basically should be the same exhaust, my engine is the OM651? whats your engine? I will look and see if I still have the old sensor in the garage and hopefully the box with the part no on it. i recommend buying a good quality sensor like bosch or similar trusted brands. I would be looking at spending £50+on a sensor or the best you can afford Bobski. Did the back pressure pipes link I sent match up with yours? On a guess the nuts your looking for could be similar to high pressure fuel pipe nuts like on injector pipes

Hi again.

I need to apologies Kev you where so helpful with a lot of advice and i never really thanked you for such information. so thanks for your help.

The problem with my van still persists for the time being and I haven't been out much to look at it But I have had an I car soft v2.0 arrive (the one that's can force a regen) anyway as I started the regen on my van (2012) 113 cdi. I noticed the temp sensor was saying 0 for a reading. but there are 8 faults reading there all connected to the same exhaust system. codes to do with the vacuum pressure sensors and that but all the codes read pending like there waiting on a result ? I am not sure if the parts are meant to read in sequence and this is why there all showing pending (maybe I am wondering is there a fuse for these component's as if its not a sequence thing then for all of them to be coming up on the code reader I feel might be strange. anyway I would appreciate any advice anyone could give in this situation. Also People keep telling me to get it remapped and delete the dpf. Is this an option what does a remap do does it take these components out of the checking loop or something?

oh yeah ps the regen thing said my dpf was at 200% full.

thanks for any advice.

A regen won't happen until the ECU thinks the engine is up to normal operating temperature.
the regen was running as when I came home the first time I tried it eventually the the Icarsoft came up with a fault after a while so i set it again and came home when i stopped on the drive way. the engine was still open throttle when i lifted my foot off so i would say the regen was active at that moment. but I Have the faults else where.

I did take it for a long run the temp got up and the regen started but as the heat sensor was reading zero i think the fault could actually be the wiring as I managed to test the sensor with a multimeter and a lighter.

i think the operating temp is deemed by the coolant. maybe you maybe know better though.

Hi Bobski, As Lostkiwi said the engine has to be at normal coolant running temperature, around 85-90 degrees and has to be at least quarter full of fuel (iirc). When you say the heat sensor was reading zero, I take it you meant the exhaust temp sensor? If any of these two sensors on the exhaust are sending back the wrong readings to the ECU the regen wont happen or will stop the process before completion. post up screenshots of the fault codes or live data of the exhaust temp sensors with the engine at normal running temp if you can.

Yeah I mean temp sensor. I took the code photos it didn't say any any of the pics. But just to remind you when the then was connected it was saying the dpf was 200% full.

Hi so I had a dpf delete carried out and have removed the dpf the van still won't run right. I cleaned the egr valve and put soapy bubbles all over the inlet manifold to see if there where any leaks. It didn't look too be leaking. I don't know what else to do. I would love to put it in but money is really tight at the moment. I just wished I could get her working right now. This is really stressing me out right now. Dose anyone have any suggestions.

Omg so I just disconnected the airflow sensor from the intercooler part of the rubber inlet pipe and she went proper. So I need to get a new sensor and hopefully she'll be all good

Hi Bobski sorry I never got back to you as I started a new job and I'm working from 9 to 8pm so too tired to look at screens during the week. I see you seem to have found the culprit anyways. Your first screenshot shows a code relating to the MAF sensor so hopefully thats your issue. I dont know why the codes are showing up for the injectors, possibly injectors are nearing end of life, or a fuel pressure problem. Just keep an eye to see if those codes return after clearing
