New Rear tyres for my E63

Hi all

Looking for some advice on rear tyres for W212 E63.

Currently have Pirelli pZero's but they're getting worn...plus they don't cut the mustard when it comes to traction in damp or wet (which this country suffers mostly from) or dry come to think of it!

A little confused, as have been taking advice from various sources, and none seem to been the general consensus.

Some are saying stick with the zero's as they offer a good balance between grip & road noise, some are saying ditch them for Goodyear Asymmetric 5's & some are saying "Nay Mr Wilks", go for the Michelin Super-sports

I've looked through the threads re above on this site, but still uncertain.....appreciate all views are subjective but if the majority are saying go for either the michelins or goodyears and there's not much difference in performance then I'd just look at price.

Has anyone changed tyres from PZero's (or another brand that wasn't giving great traction for that matter) & fitted the above Goodyears or Michelins?

Would greatly appreciate your experiences advice on this

My recollection and in summary of various tyre threads on the forum is something like:

Michelin pilot sport 4s for all out best performance

Goodyear Asy5 for a slight compromise at the performance limits but slightly better comfort and noise

I don't own an E63 and I haven't had the Mich PS4s, but I have used the Goodyears, which were, er, good all year....

The P-Zero's on my E63 are getting close to needing changing and I will be going for Goodyear Asymmetric 5's when the time comes.
Pricing them up, it appears Camskill's are the cheapest, but you need to arrange fitting.
Asda are next best for price and you can choose your fitter from a list of local agents.

You can’t get PS4S in the correct fitment for the standard rears unfortunately but I have got the supersports all around and they are night and day different than the Pirelli’s… the only downside compared to the Pirelli’s is the stiffer side walls do affect comfort very slightly but all of that positives more than outweigh that little downside. I highly recommend the Michelin’s

OP - You're 100% spot on in your Pirelli comments. They are not upto the job in cold/adverse conditions.

I've tested most and as above, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and Goodyear Eagle Asy 5 are the best out there, setting a new tangible benchmark in performance.

The Pilot Sport 4 feels ever so slightly vague at the straight ahead position compared to the Goodyear Asy 5 but, the moment you make an input, its very reactive but not twitchy. This is the first Michelin Pilot that also keeps performing as the tread depth gets low. The Goodyear, feels a little more sublime (progressive) in nature and now in the Asym 5 guise, delivering 98% of the outright grip that the Pilot 4 does wet or dry. The Goodyear still retains its awesome ability of consistent performance cold or hot and upto around 2mm, after which performance only degrades slowly (about 2.5mm for the Pilot 4).

You will be happy with either of the above on such a car rain or shine.

Hi all

Thanks for advices/comments....I think by the sounds of it I can do no wrong with either tyre make....I've just recently changed the fronts to Michelin Pilot Sport 4's having inherited some unknown American brand when I bought the car a few months back!! My OCD bell was ringing for me to match the front Michelins to some at the back, but now feel both G/Year & Michelin are as good as each other...it's down to price I think ...and the Goodyears win that battle....

I'll post a few comments once changed & let you know if the change has been a success

personally I’d match all 4! If you have pilots on the front, get pilots on the back as well. When driving through standing water each tyre will react the same due to identical tread and design.

I only used to occasionally run different pairs on different axles before the days of the ever increasing speed cameras mainly to alter the handling characteristics of my previous M5 at hooligan cornering speeds and antics.

Tyres...yes as you say entirely subjective and dependant on your individual driving style.
My boy racer days are over so whatever my car is originally fitted with is good enough for me, plus I havent needed to change tyres on any car since 2009. :p
A stand out memory I have of tyres dates back to my boy racer days in the mid/late 80's
I had a lovely Rover 213 in Moonraker Blue (B809 BGB) and life was great, then I inherited a Rover 216 VP EFi also in Moonraker Blue (C718 HUS) from daddy which was fitted with the standard Good Year Grand Prix S. I cannot remember what tyres were fitted to the 213 but almost right away I had a bad experience with the 216 in that the first time I braked hard the car skidded.
Very soon after that I fitted a set of alloys with Pirelli P4 and life was good again. :cool:

hi guys,
Tyre time. I bought a w212 e63 amg s with 16k miles on the clock in April but given the tyres are the original ones, the rubber has began cracking a bit given the age. The rears since i bought them are now down to 3mm (ive done 3k miles and the last 1.5k has been cooking the rear tyres). ive been surprised at how okay the front end grip has been on the pirelli tyres in the wet. I never expect the rear end to have much grip and i always drive in sport handling mode so do like slippy wheels. my previous car, c63 s estate was always sliding around too on its MPSS. My W211 E63 swapped for this car had MPS4 tyres on it and they were impressive too.
In terms of tyre choices, there is sticking with MO Pirellis,
or fitting MPSS
or maybe asymetric 5s
or dunlop sport maxx 2.
What i want to avoid is pirellis in the front (they have 7.5mm tread left so i dont think i want to replace them just yet) and something else in the rear.
I'm sort of leaning towards replacing like for like but I really liked the MPSS i had on the c class. any thoughts would be appreciated. I know many folks arent fans of P Zeros but they seem alright to me.

with a sporty car like that, i would be inclined to have all four corners the same to ensure allround balanced optimal road grip.

Was back in 1987, I was only 20 and a typical boy racer with a lot to learn.
I was extremely proud of my car and was the envy of my workmates and friends, and possibly their dads too. :D
A young whippersnapper had no right to be driving a top of the range model (when new) 18 month old car. :p

I have the same car with P Zero's all round. As you, the fronts have ample tread but I'm down to around 3-4mm on the rears and will probably change them for Asymmetric5 's when the time comes. Not particularly impressed with the P zeros in the cold or damp, but its expecting a lot when there is so much torque available.
