It's the B5 again, never look forward to what comes up! Additional items this time are, Air and fuel filters, plus a brake fluid change. I must admit when you hear of £178 + VAT for a fuel filter you do wonder why we don't just drive Ford Mondeo's, but where would the fun be in that :).
As the car ages I'm not sure how long I will keep, seems silly paying for servicing when it starts getting close or over 10% of the cars value.

Don't take it to a dealer and then you won't be paying silly prices ;)
It's not at a dealer, but a MB specialists. I am not winging about that, as I chose to go there, and have been happy with the service, it was more about the future and being able to keep the car serviced within a budget. I would try some things myself, but I'm worried that I'll break something.

So was the only additional item the brake fluid? I have no intention of ever going to a main dealer.

You might think that paying a sizeable percentage of the value of the car for a service is a bad idea. but...
Is the car reliable and a known quantity? That's worth something...
Plus, you are saving a lot of depreciation compared to a newer car.
We once paid £1100 for a 13-year-old Lexus LS400m to be recommissioned, despite only paying £1300 for the car. It was worth it, as the car was delightful afterwards.

All done, something very satisfying about having the B service. The only expensive part was the fuel filter, but that will last me a good few years now. In all the B was £590, which was always accounted for. I think I was expecting something a lot more. And all done by a garage I trust.

You see, I'm making a saving already!

But did you get a new fuel filter that also requires electric power to work?
