Hello all. I'm Adam. From a little town in the west Midlands. As the title suggests I have inherited my late father's car, who sadly passed away just over a month ago.

It's a 1998 Mercedes 240. He bought it way back in 1999 when I was 7.

I've just given my old car to my sister and today is the first day I've got it on the road.

1st stop, garage for an air con regas HA! It has been stood for about 4 years. Started 1st time. Flew through the MOT. So I'm overjoyed to have it on the road myself.

There's a few problems here and there but I'll browse the forum for help on that.

Hopefully these photos upload so you can see the beast.

Look forward to learning from you all.

Adam

Hello and welcome,

W210 is a great car, rust is it's biggest issue unfortunately :(
I'd be looking to get those headlights polished up, apart from that it looks very nice indeed.

That's in great condition - even more so for a 210 (speaking as the owner of one that's slowly dissolving). They're a superb drive and will happily run all day without breaking a sweat or leaving you with aching back and joints. We regularly use ours to run to the Southwest of France and MrsLK always remarks how comfortable it is.

Welcome to the forum :)

They were even worse before the mot. The garage had to polish them. They do need some more attention for sure though.

If these are polycarbonate headlights, you can DIY this with amazing results. I have.

Remove the lights from the car so you can do a great job on the lights (possibly a bumper off job, but usually not that difficult or time consuming if you have a helper).

Sand the headlight with 600 grit wet and dry (wet, with water) until all yellow and all large scratched and chips removed (don't need to polish afterwards).

Wet and dry again at 1200 grit until uniformly sanded.

Mask the areas of the light that you don't want clear coating.
Spray the headlight with 3 thin coats using a 2k clear coat that you can buy in an aerosol (about £20 of Amazon or the bay of dreams). The cans have a push-pin in the bottom to release the hardener, so you have to use it immediately. Use 2k clear coat so you get very good UV protection.
This is the one I used:
The clearcoat flows and fills in all the minor scuffs, and looks totally clean and see-through after spraying, so you don't need to 'polish' the lights to get a high gloss finish, just like you don't need to polish a car panel to a mirror finish prior to painting it.

Leave to dry for 24 hours and reassemble. Looked like new, and didn't deteriorate at all for another 4 years before selling the car.

Your old man will be proud you are looking after his car. He must have took care of it all those years. W210's are solid motors.

Hi Adam

Condolences on the loss of your Dad and as mioba says I'm sure he's looking down with pride to see you running it. Who'd have thought a 23-years old car could look so good? -It definitley comes from the time when Mercedes had that thing called "presence" on the street so I'm sure you will enjoy it!

On the maintenance front, over the last year or so there have been a lot of 'orrible stories of sub-frames rotting away with practically no warning - so I would get it checked out - soon. This happens because the rot starts on the the inside - so it needs real inspection - not just a cursory glance). Presuming it's all okay I would have it injected with some "anti-rot goo" (no doubt someone can advise the best product to keep it rot-free). My C-Estate is from 2007 and every time it goes in for service work (at a local-100% trustworthy independent) the guys check it out for me.

Enjoy your car!

Welcome a very nice car, the engine has a good name. Depending where you are in the West Mids there are some good independent MB dealers, much cheaper the MB.

Thanks for all of your comments. I'll look into all the above mentioned issues as well.

1st problem arose yesterday when the rear window decided it wanted to stay down. Booked in tomorrow at the garage who have looked after it the last decade or more.
