I Shud be home in late Oct I am going to take a serious look at the hillman minx no tech no need dealer no mot no tax. No DPF, erg, sbc, no need to get brain programmed to tow sommat easy to fix. Think fuel economy penalty covered by avoiding all the tech, dealer magnets. Electronic ignition job dun re mapping! A trip to smith's for sum new Michelin fold ups. Struggling to see downside if decent version found?

I would prefer a Sunbeam Rapier, had covers in the front wings to prevent the dreaded rust there. Also overdrive on 3rd and 4th.

A Sunbeam Tiger would be preferable, an MGB GT V8 even more so!

They’re not though, horrible to drive, uncomfortable and terrible build quality. There’s a reason cars have moved on… :(

I went to the classic Le Mans with a bunch of Triumph, Peerless and MG owners, the smell of petrol, oil, water leaks made it very unpleasant for the drivers and passengers (as well as the frequent breakdowns) I was driving an R230 SL500… :p and had a very enjoyable trip (even though the AC wasn’t working)

Using a classic as a daily driver could end up being a headache, suppose it depends on how long your daily drive is ? Iv'e been fancying a Triumph Stag just lately.

I used a 1990 Defender as a semi daily for about 5 years. It was actually ok!
That's different... ;) :rolleyes: :p :D :oops::)o_O

Although, I can see how a defender can give you a "semi" daily - or perhaps we're just "over-sharing" here... :eek:

I love cars from the 60's, 70's & 80's. However would l like one as a daily driver? Probably not due to build, old technology, relative lack of power / heavy fuel consumption, leaks etc. That said, do l want a brand new diesel with DPF issues or a new petrol with a wheezy little engine and stop / start? Or an electric/hybrid? No l don't thank you very much. For me there's a sweet spot between the early 90's to about 2008 where cars are advanced just enough to improve reliability etc without becoming unnecessarily complex.

Ohhh I miss my W124.
Was talking to my indy last week, he was raving about how great the w123 are. He had one in the ramp so it was a conversation starter.
We concluded they were engineered to perfection from the smallest screw and nothing complicated.

Walked around a small classic car show at the week end,
my 129 is about as old as I would go for a daily driver.

Could be tempted with a Cologne built 2.8i Capri though.

Try a modern BMW you even have to register a new battery to the car (via the OBD port) so the car knowns you have fitted one, or you’re heading for trouble, something to do with the alternator and charging rates apparently.
Looks like I’m in the market for a diagnostic code reader as a necessity

Ahh the 2.8i capri was the car i would loved to haved owned. Esp the Cologne built models, my Granada was a German built one and what a difference from the british ones, really solid nothing seemed to break off easily and very reliable , lusted after the Brooklands version but sadly could not afford one at the time and now rare as hens teeth so well out of my pocket , sadly :-(

The Mk111 cortina was one of the worst, thousands of shells standing piled up on factory grounds not covered up covered in rust, then basic sandblasted and then painted. Rust was still in the metal so not a chance really!
