Why did you chose the model you bought? Not engine size, car model.

You should know by now that Land Rovers have many undocumented features and just when you think you've found the last they'll supply you a new one......
It's why I love them so much... perfect cars are boring...;)

You need an R230 then....
An R230 is probably a little too "interesting" for me...

The will it, won't it "boing" every time you go to start it is more excitement than I require in my commuting life...

My old S210 was bought as I needed a large estate. When it eventually died, I bought the car I had always wanted for many years but was not in a position to buy it for various reasons. The right car came along at the right time and I love it as much today as I did when I bought it. Something about the V10 that you just don't get in cars these days (lack of fuel economy lol). I guess it's similar to the AMG guys who say you should own the M113K engined E Class at least once in your life, you won't regret it.

...." and carbon fibre disc costs worried me (future retirement)".....
During 2013 a group of us were heading West>East along the N152 roughly from Pamplona to Rialp. The 997.2 911 Turbo S cooked it's ceramic brakes. For months there was wrangling over the warranty/ill suited nature of the brakes with Porsche Germany. The replacement discs cost E22,000 back then, IIRC Porsche contributed some. Not long after that, probably the following year, it happened again. The second time the owner had to pay all the bill. AFAIC ceramic brakes would put me off a car.

It's known that some AMG owners who require new ceramic discs just buy steel replacements due to the cost.
I've read of owners removing virtually new ceramic discs, putting steel ones on and saving the ceramic ones for when they sell the car.
Unless you are tracking the car or using it predominantly on mountain roads I don't see the need for ceramic discs.
My own opinion of course.

S500 (W222) 2014. Turbo 4.7 V8 with loads of toys. Superfast luxury.
Just a curiosity I have about what caught your interest about the class of car you bought and got you looking at them in the first place?

I'll get the ball rolling. I was mid 30s, just about to get back to driving after a TT99 ban, and the loss of a company car. The company said I could have another car, but after being banned they would only give me a Mondeo 1.8 LX. Not sure what it was that got me very interested in a R129 SL, but I was about to put a deposit down, and thought I would check with my insurance that they had all my details correct. They had my SP30 x2 and my SP60, when I told them those codes were no longer on my licence and I had TT99, the quote increased from £400 to £5500. Needless to say I did not get the SL in my 30s.

For the last four years I had a 2nd hand Vogue SE Range Rover, and slowly been driven insane by it, I knew I needed a change. But where to go after the ridiculous luxury and fitment level of a fully spec'd RR? I nearly bought another newer one with a bigger engine, but could not bring myself to go through the pains of getting another RR up to standard, or the constant niggling at the back of my mind about what the next £1000++ would be spent on. So I looked at GranCabrios, 911 Turbos, and lots of other things, but everything had some kind of red flag waving in my mind's eye or a much larger commitment ££ wise.

Then a friend bought an E450 cab and that got me looking at Merc again. This was the right idea, and I realised very quickly this was the way to go. I looked at the prices of R230s and my eyes popped, my wallet opened and I am the very happy owner of an old(ish) SL.

I'd love to here what was it about your model that attracted you ?
Had an E500 (W211) for 11 years and loved it. Always promised myself an S class "to try one" Had to be a V* and the W222 with the 4.7 biturbo still ticks all the boxes a couple of happy years later.

2021 213 E300e estate 216Cdi Sprinter (stretched limo)
After an extended period of ownership of an E-class we had a new S-class for seven days... My wife did not like it, and she was not for turning. We ended up with the latest 213. I was desperate for her to have the S-class, and I would have ordered that nice deep, metallic red with beige interior, but it was simply not to be. She is however very happy with this new car.

I think the biggest dislike was the exterior mirror blocking her view. Yes the car felt slightly wider, but she drives\chauffeurs me about in my 'stretched limo' or Sprinter van and has NO problems with that vehicle.

The external mirrors obstructing her view was 'a deal breaker' She is an amazing driver, reverses our Sprinter into the driveway and parking it at a right-angle. Sometimes when it is delivered back from being serviced, she will end up parking it. No problems with the Sprinter mirrors obscuring her view and I'm guessing no one else has issues with the off-side mirror? No adjustment of the front seat would resolve her complaint so goodbye S-class :(

The car was for her and if I am totally honest, the E-class estate matches her requirements to a 'T' She now loves the new vehicle, so a good choice was made. The car I would have really loved to buy her would have been an SL, but pigs would fly before she would have agreed to that!! :) :) No harm in dreaming

I wanted an SLS but settled for my much loved SL500 R230 2005 I've own it 8 years and covered 9000 miles with no issues? MB have service and replaced filters oil etc. The only area that I've ignored is the ABC and yes it failed me last week (due to lockdown) Passage side suspension has been misting oil for the last 6 years and now its leaking oil out the front on the drivers side. Goes in next week for repairs?

Only the Vito left! W639/1 OM646
W639 because they're cheaper than a similar T5. Come with double side doors, bulletproof OM646 engine (that maps really well), rear wheel drive and can carry a sheet of 4x8, all my diving gear, bicycles to the alps or my motorbike for a track day.
