Starter motor not aligned

Hi all,

Anyone ever had an issue with a starter motor for a s55 m113 engine mated to a 7226 c43 box having issues with alignment?

The starter works, tested it, but when bolted on it getting stuck as it's hitting the flywheel.

Starter is bosch
A112 151 00 01
Bosch number 0 986 017 890
Engine 01/02 m113 s55 amg

Hi all,

Some cars had a spacer fitted. Not sure if a 55 has.

Where would the spacer be fitted if it was missing. To the crank case or the starter?
And is the spacer a small cylinder shape?

The spacer is the shape of the outer edge and goes between the bell housing and the face of the starter motor. It just helps if its meshing too close/further away form the flywheel

Hi,
I never noticed a shim there but saying that the engine was separate from the car so maybe it fell off during removal by the previous owner.

Hi,
I never noticed a shim there but saying that the engine was separate from the car so maybe it fell off during removal by the previous owner.
Only older engines tend to have it. Never seen one on an m113/m112 and the shim will only move the gear further towards/away from the flywheel, and not move it close to the block...

If the engine and gearbox are not an mb fitment, ie not designed to match, then a modification would have to be designed.
S55 113 engine with a c43 box??

If the engine and gearbox are not an mb fitment, ie not designed to match, then a modification would have to be designed.
S55 113 engine with a c43 box??
Yes 2001 s55 m113 engine NA to a 722.6 c43 box. They fit perfectly but the starter just slightly off

Swap the bell housings from an S55 box would be the easiest

Swap the bell housings from an S55 box would be the easiest
Sounds good but when I bolted the starter to just the engine it still had the same issue. After a little playing around I got the starter to sit correctly but then it went out of alignment. Thinking it just needed be bolted in with the gearbox attached to help line it up made no difference. I'll have a look for a bell housing for that box. But you see what i mean as it's not necessarily the box but rather how it's bolted to the engine.
I wonder if the flywheel if different if it was changed by the previous shop. I'll check that tomorrow.

If its really close, you can try and elongate the mounting holes, then insert a bush to move the bolted position.

If its really close, you can try and elongate the mounting holes, then insert a bush to move the bolted position.
There was a bush in one of the mounting holes on the gearbox side of the crank case. It could need replacing or it could be seated incorrectly. Lots to look at but I'm so close to starting the engine lol

Hi, Had a check and the bell housing are the same code A210 271 18 01.

I compared both the flywheel numbers and they are the same.

I checked the flywheel and it's alignment with the starter. It is now engaging correctly with the right gap. But strangely on the key turn you can hear the starter gear connect to the flywheel but then nothing.

I removed the flywheel and tried to spin up the starter. Starter gear moved forwards to where it should contact to the flywheel but then rotated very very slowly like the power just stopped going to the starter.

Ran a multimeter on the cables leading to the starter and then the starter 12.22v. Checked all earth cables.

One thing I was wondering is the battery and amp required to fire a 5.5. I checked online and its average is 95h 800A. And I'm using a battery 80h 760a.

Could this be a factor?

A pre-engaged starter flings the gear into the starter ring and as it gets to the end of its stroke makes contacts inside the starter to spin it & the engine over. Sounds as though your starter isn't making a good enough circuit inside. You can sometimes turn the contacts over to newer material.

A pre-engaged starter flings the gear into the starter ring and as it gets to the end of its stroke makes contacts inside the starter to spin it & the engine over. Sounds as though your starter isn't making a good enough circuit inside. You can sometimes turn the contacts over to newer material.
It's a new starter from merc. I'll test it outside of the car circuit to make sure it fires and work backwards from there. I did try another battery but the same issue happened just with more power

Ah!
Maybe a bad earth as above or maybe iffy connection from the battery
