fault occurred yesterday as follows. After 10 mile run stopped at traffic lights and noticed additional revs required to set off. Arrived home and the car failed to move in all selected positions on the auto box. After standing for 5 minutes on restarting the engine all was OK again. I have used the W setting on the box all winter. I searched the forum for details on how to check the oil level and was unable to find a dipstick. I visited my local MB dealers and they told me that the dipstick is a workshop tool and is not available and recommended that I book the car in for repair. I returned home in disgust in my faithful vauxhall corsa that I need to keep for when my Mercedes lets me down. However I need the merc for towing my caravan so I am need to fix it once again. Has anyone any idea where I can obtain a dipstick or dimensions to make one. The fault may lie elswhere but I think I need to eliminate ATF problem first. I need to be confident of the mercs ability to tow as I find breaking down with a caravan in tow stressful.

if you have a look on a thread i started "transmission queries" theres a post in there with a pc of the important end of the dipstick. you can use this to make your own dipstick from that plastic coated spiral stuff people used to use to hang net curtains etc up with. cant remember what its called!

The dipstick is available to anyone who wants to pay for it. It has a red top and is about a meter long. They cost somewhere in the region of £35, thats approx what I paid for mine. You will need to replace the anti tamper bung in the top of the cap (your choice if you do) after setting the oil level. The part number starts A000 545 xx xx.

Make sure you measure the oil when its hot, so do about 6-7 miles in your car to warm it up. If its low you'll need to establish the area of the leak. It might be the electrical connector on the transmission itself, which is common as the plug seals fail.

Simply not true, the official MB line is that it is only available to VAT registered workshops, no one else can buy it.

Some MB dealers will sell them to anyone who asks, others will not.
E-Bay US usually has them for sale, even after postage it works out less than buying it from a UK dealer.

That is the picture Russ over here as you say, I wonder what their legal standing is on refusing to sell them, that would come under the banned restrictive practices act

I have one, used it at the weekend even. Bought from Stratstones after i promised them that i did have a 722.6 box and i knew what i was doing with it. If you can get over here, I'll happily let you dip your box with it.

Thanks for all your help guys. I decided to try a local garage for help as I decided that I might do more harm than good. They did not fancy the job either! However they recommended a gearbox specialist in Preston. I am waiting for their diagnosis. I learned that when there is a fault on the gearbox it goes into "default mode" ie 3rd gear. Hence the delay and 2500 revs reqired to move off from standstill. (tricky at roundabouts).
I do not usually admit defeat but as I am nearly 70 I think the time has come to let the professionals earn a little cash before my savings have all gone.

I have the T-shirt. Bought the dipstick from the dealer at approximately the same price I would have paid from E-Bay or elsewhere, plus postage. Only to find that the plastic bit at the bottom is all that matters. You cannot leave this dipstick in the tube as it is too long and not made for that.

Thus, use the measurements offerred on this excellent site and make your own dipstick, it will be as good as the dealers'.

When changing the fluid, which I did last weekend, only 2,5 litres came out of the sump, 4,5 liters out of the torque convertor. To line up the torque converter drain plug you need a big Allen-key (on a socket) to turn the crank pulley.

After filling with 7 liters, I am still a bit off the full mark.

Not to take a chance, I used genuine MBenz ATF (at a heavy price) instead of Castrol Transmax-M which I use in my other cars.

I am only 64 but will agree with Mercury, at 70 I will probably also have to find someone to do this for me.

I don't think there is a drain plug for the torque convertor on newer models, they went the same way as the dipsticks I believe.

Mate you're not far away from me. If you're around the Urmston area of Manchester anytime, you're welcome to pop by and I'll dip it for you.

I do wonder if they have put one back in now that that are recommending ATF changes at 40K miles. It was end of 1999 IIRC that they dropped the Torque Converter drain plug.

To be exact it was totally finished with by 22-09 99 though many cars long before this did not have one

I had similar issues with my wife's w210, and I dropped it off at Colin Ferns. They sorted it out in a day, and it is as good as new.

It appears that when it sat for 3 months, the sump seal shrank, and the gearbox oil leaked out. By the time we drove it from the continent back to London, there was barely any left!

You can buy the dipstick from Inchcape, I did.

Measuring stick. P/N MW140 589 15 21/00 £26.35 plus vat and shipping.

I want to do an oil change on mine and will need this, but can't find it on their site using the part number - do you have a link to the item?
