2001 SLK BAS warning light diagnosis

Hi fellas,

My sister has a 2001 3.2 SLK which has had an intermittent BAS light warning for the last month or so, today she had the car hooked up at her local Mercedes dealer who diagnosed the that problem was either the brake light switch or the lateral acceleration sensor, cost for them to change both is £379.

I figure that I'll change the brake light-switch for her & see how it goes, should the problem turn out to be the lateral acceleration sensor have you guys got any pointers as to where its located, is it a relatively easy fix etc?

Yes spend £10 on the switch,,if if does not cure it I can give you a work sheet for the rest :D:D:D

Thank you Malcolm that's great, hopefully it'll just be the brake-switch thats the problem :D

The lateral accel sensor is under the centre console.If the bas light comes on when the brake is pressed its prob the brake light switch.

I pick up the brake light switch on Thursday, in my minds eye the swap over is to easy for words, but just in case is there any niggly little surprises in store for me? lol :eek: :D

Hi guys,

I switched over the brake-light switch this morning & the BAS light is still glowing, I even disconnected the battery for 10 mins to see if it cleared but to no avail :(

Now turning my attention to the lateral acceleration sensor, is it much of job? Any pointers would be much appreciated, its gotta be easier than the undignified "head down-bottom up" contortionist procedure involved with the brake switch :)

newbie with just this problem, SLK 230

hiya guys, new member here, with a 1998 SLK230, owned it for 7 years, just struck her up for the summer and my ABS / ESR light is on permanently, also, the roof won't operate, I guess the roof fails as a safety option due to the ESP shutting down??.
So, after reading the detailed posts here do I change the brake light switch first and then the latteral acceleration sensor second?
by the way, the brake lights still work, does that mean the brake switch is not duff?

turn the steering full left to right and restart, try that first!

with the engine running? forgive my abject stupidity, but, I turn her on, full lock left, full lock right, switch off, restart> yeah?

just tried that, lights still on ......... I see that the engine has to be running as you can't really turn the wheel without power steering! duh :mrgreen:

As for the roof, as you push the button push the roof up with your hand, the roof seals glue themselves together!!

nah mate, fully familiar with that one (roof), this has only started since the ASR and ABS lights came on .... the roof just won't operate (no whirring etc), light just flashes as if the boot flap microswitch isn't engaged, but too coincidental to be unconnected I figure. I've had the old SLK intermittent roof failures before & I just live with it, happens 2 / 3 times a year, but always clears up, this is deffo different.

Have you tried to lube all the rubbers around the roof, that the dealer method, and do work 9 times out of ten!!

yeah, I do that at least twice a year, this is 101% a new one on me, as I say, normally if the roof is going to play me up, I get the boot come up, all the noises and right signs and just as the roof is about to open, it doesn't; this time it's just the flashing button, but this all since the 2 lights came on. Seems I need to start with a new brake light switch, then the B24/2 sensor, then if all else fails it's down to the specialists for a diog .....
