Any information welcome on how to deal with an electronic key issue.

Sometimes it works, othertimes it's in and out and evetually it starts the car?
This is with both keys - however I'm not convinced the spare is 100% reliable anyway?

Very fustrating!

Yes batteries are good in both remotes and they open the doors and boot.

By the way welcome to the Forum, there have been a number of posts on this subject so I would do a search before attempting anything further. I had a similar problem a couple of years back my local indie sorted it but for the life of me I am unable to remember what he did other than it cost me £60 ish

The battery to work the immobiliser isn't the same one used to work the central locking. It's a rechargeable that takes its power from the keyhole and charges when its in the ignition. An ageing key that isn't used often enough could go flat and cause this. The fix is to leave it in the ignition for an hour or two to charge up.
The remote side of the key is totally separate to the immobiliser side so the fact that one works has no bearing on the other I'm afraid.
Assuming yours are ok (not common to get this issue with both keys at the same time), there have been similar issues with the keyswitch itself. Expensive I'm afraid, around £400+ from memory.

Your nearly correct Jberks, the EIS picks up the signal via infra red from the key, theres no charge going into the key, suspect the EIS is going down!
